Buccaneers’ Jalen McMillan Faces Extended Absence Due to Injury

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Jalen McMillan will be sidelined for an unspecified period due to a “severely strained neck,” as confirmed by head coach Todd Bowles. The injury occurred during the Bucs’ second preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on August 26, 2023. McMillan fell awkwardly while attempting to make a catch, resulting in a collision with defensive back Daryl Porter Jr.
Following the incident, medical personnel attended to McMillan on the field. He was able to walk off under his own power but was later taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. A source indicated that he was cleared to return with the team while wearing a neck brace. Subsequent tests in Tampa revealed the extent of the injury, though Bowles assured that it “shouldn’t be” career-threatening.
Impact on the Buccaneers’ Roster
This setback poses a significant challenge for the Buccaneers, who are already missing another key receiver. Chris Godwin is currently recovering from ankle surgery and remains on the active/PUP list. McMillan, a third-round draft pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, showcased his potential last season by leading the NFL with seven touchdown catches in the final five weeks of the regular season.
The Buccaneers will need to adjust their game plan as they prepare for the upcoming regular season. With McMillan’s absence, the team may look to other players to step up in the receiving corps.
As the situation develops, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the Buccaneers cope without two of their top wide receivers.
