Bengals Trade for Joe Flacco as Playoff Hopes Hang in Balance

The Cincinnati Bengals have acquired veteran quarterback Joe Flacco from the Cleveland Browns, a move made just two days after Bengals head coach Zac Taylor expressed uncertainty regarding Jake Browning‘s status as the starting quarterback. This trade comes as the Bengals seek to end a three-game losing streak and maintain their playoff aspirations following Joe Burrow‘s toe injury sustained in Week 2.

Flacco’s arrival marks a significant shift for Cincinnati, as they aim to stabilize their quarterback position. The seasoned veteran began the season with the Browns, starting four games but accumulating a disappointing 1-3 record. His performance included two interceptions in a narrow 17-16 defeat against the Bengals during their season opener on September 7, 2023. While Flacco is a well-known name in the league, his ability to lift the Bengals’ struggling offense remains uncertain.

Flacco’s statistics reflect challenges; he ranks near the bottom in the league for Total Quarterback Rating (QBR), with a score of just 27.6. In comparison, Browning has thrown eight interceptions, which is the second highest in the NFL. Flacco’s experience may provide some immediate benefits, but he must improve from his earlier performance to help the Bengals weather the storm until Burrow’s return.

Cincinnati has not yet established a timeline for Burrow’s recovery, but sources indicate that he is expected to be sidelined for at least three months. Despite this, Coach Taylor has not ruled out the possibility of Burrow returning this season.

Impact on Browns’ Quarterback Situation

The trade has significant implications for the Browns, particularly for their quarterback room, which now features Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Following Flacco’s departure, Gabriel took over as the starting quarterback, having made his NFL debut in a challenging matchup against a formidable defense. His performance earned him 16.1 fantasy points, showcasing his potential.

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam emphasized the importance of evaluating both Gabriel and Sanders as they prepare for the 2026 NFL Draft, where they hold their own first-round pick as well as one from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Haslam stated, “It’s absolutely important for the team to evaluate both rookies on the field before the draft.” With Flacco out of the picture, Sanders is now positioned to be the backup quarterback, offering him valuable game experience as the team moves forward without Flacco.

Current starter Deshaun Watson remains on the physically unable to perform list due to an Achilles injury, expected to keep him sidelined for a significant portion of the 2025 season. With Watson’s absence, the Browns are fully committed to Gabriel’s development.

Fantasy Football Considerations

Flacco’s trade also raises questions about the fantasy football landscape for both the Bengals and Browns. Flacco struggled during his time in Cleveland, failing to achieve double-digit fantasy points in all but one game, completing only 58.1% of his passes. His departure signals a vote of confidence in Gabriel’s abilities and offers him more opportunities for development.

For the Bengals, Flacco’s entry into the roster may provide a slight boost for wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Although Flacco’s EPA (expected points added) per dropback ranks poorly, his extensive experience may enhance the predictability of routes for both receivers. This could elevate their fantasy potential during the interim until Burrow returns.

As the AFC North unfolds, the division appears more competitive than it has in recent years. The Bengals’ decision to trade for Flacco reflects their belief that they can still contend despite their current challenges. With the Baltimore Ravens struggling and the Pittsburgh Steelers emerging as early favorites, the Bengals must capitalize on their offensive skill set to regain traction and fight for playoff positioning as the season progresses.
