Ben Stokes Returns to Training, Boosts England’s Ashes Hopes
England’s cricket team has received a significant boost in its quest for victory in the Ashes series, with Test captain Ben Stokes returning to training. Stokes, who was sidelined due to a shoulder injury sustained during the fourth Test against India in July, has resumed practice at Durham County Cricket Club. His recovery is crucial for England as they aim to secure their first Ashes series win in Australia since 2011.
In a recent interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Durham coach Ryan Campbell confirmed that Stokes participated in a training session where he batted for nearly two hours. Campbell stated, “Stokes is back in training,” and emphasized, “Over the last week, he’s started to hit balls and had a really good session. Scott Borthwick was throwing to him with (coach) Will Gidman for nearly two hours.”
Stokes’s fitness is paramount as England prepares for the upcoming Ashes series, which is set to commence in November. The team is also monitoring the fitness of fast bowler Mark Wood, who is recovering from a knee injury he sustained during the ICC Champions Trophy in February. Campbell indicated that Wood is likely to feature in a red-ball match for Durham in next week’s County Championship as a means to demonstrate his fitness ahead of the series.
In a strategic move to maintain player fitness, England has withdrawn left-handed batsman Ben Duckett and wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith from their squad for the upcoming T20I matches against South Africa. England coach Brendon McCullum believes this decision will allow the players to rest and recharge, ultimately enhancing their performance when they arrive in Australia.
As Stokes and Wood work towards regaining their full fitness, the England team remains focused on breaking their long-standing winless streak in Australia. With crucial matches ahead, the return of key players could make a significant difference in their campaign for the Ashes.
