Bears’ Caleb Williams Shines in Preseason Opener Against Bills

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams made a significant impact in his preseason debut on March 3, 2024, leading the team to a commanding 38-0 victory over the Buffalo Bills. This performance marked a strong start for the Bears, who had previously struggled, being one of three teams not to score a touchdown on their opening offensive possession in 2024.
Williams orchestrated an impressive opening drive, covering 92 yards in just seven plays. He capped off the drive with a 36-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus. “I think it sets a tone for how we expect ourselves to play,” Williams said, emphasizing the importance of the performance for the team’s identity.
The Bears began the game on offense after the Bills, who won the coin toss, opted to defer. Following a mishap by receiver Tyler Scott on the kickoff return, which placed the Bears at their own 8-yard line, Williams demonstrated poise in navigating the field. His ability to connect with key players, including tight ends Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet, as well as his established rapport with DJ Moore, showcased his readiness for the upcoming season.
In total, Williams completed 6 of 10 passes for 107 yards with a passer rating of 103.6 during his 13 snaps. His performance under coach Ben Johnson comes after a productive training camp, which included a joint practice with the Bills just days prior to the game. “He’s really been locked in,” Johnson noted, highlighting the quarterback’s growth throughout training camp.
Williams acknowledged the challenges that come with being a young player. “I think I had a couple of practices where I took two steps forward, then a step back,” he said. He is committed to maintaining a growth mindset and leading his team effectively.
Despite some struggles in prior practices, including issues with false starts on the offensive line, Williams excelled against the Bills’ first-team defense, managing to avoid any interceptions. He performed admirably in seven-on-seven drills, completing 9 of 10 attempts and throwing two touchdowns to rookie wide receiver Rome Odunze.
As the game progressed, backup quarterback Tyson Bagent took over for Williams and continued the offensive momentum, completing 13 of 22 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown. The Bears outgained the Bills by an impressive 348 yards, with offensive coordinator Declan Doyle stepping in to call plays during the second half.
Williams’ strong performance in his debut game reflects his potential as a leader for the Bears, setting a promising tone for the remainder of the preseason and beyond. As preparation for the regular season continues, his development will be crucial for Chicago’s aspirations in the upcoming NFL campaign.
