Arsenal Claims 1-0 Victory Over Manchester United at Old Trafford

Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on September 3, 2023. The match’s only goal came from a mistake by United’s goalkeeper Altay Bayindir in the 13th minute, allowing Riccardo Calafiori to score with a simple header. Despite a dominant performance for large stretches of the match, United struggled to find the back of the net, leaving manager Ruben Amorim with further questions about his squad’s attacking capabilities.
United introduced summer signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha into the starting lineup, with Benjamin Sesko coming on in the final 25 minutes. Amorim had previously confirmed that goalkeeper André Onana was fit to play, but opted for Bayindir, a decision that ultimately backfired. Arsenal also fielded their new signings, including Martín Zubimendi and Viktor Gyökeres, though they did not fully capitalize on their chances.
Bayindir’s error stemmed from a corner kick taken by Declan Rice. He appeared hesitant and was unable to clear the danger, resulting in Calafiori’s goal. United’s failure to capitalize on their chances was evident when Patrick Dorgu hit the post in the first half, and Cunha showed promise but lacked the finishing touch.
Arsenal’s Depth Proves Critical
A major focus of Arsenal’s summer transfer strategy was to enhance squad depth, and this was evident in the substitutions made by manager Mikel Arteta. Players such as Kai Havertz and Myles Lewis-Skelly, who were regular starters the previous season, now provide strong backup options. The introduction of Jurriën Timber and Mikel Merino, along with the significant signing of Noni Madueke for £52 million from Chelsea, demonstrates the Gunners’ commitment to building a robust squad.
The second half saw Arsenal adopt a more defensive approach, relying on their physical substitutes to maintain their lead. The decision to start Calafiori over Lewis-Skelly at left back surprised some, but he managed to influence the game positively, reminiscent of his stunning goal against Manchester City in September 2022.
Manchester United’s Goalkeeping Concerns Resurface
United’s goalkeeping situation remains a pressing issue, particularly after Bayindir’s costly mistake. The Turkish international was selected due to Onana’s hamstring injury, which had sidelined him throughout the preseason. Although Onana is fit now, he has not been convincing since joining from Ajax two years ago. United’s management has attempted to quell speculation regarding a new goalkeeper, including distancing themselves from a potential move for Gianluigi Donnarumma of Paris Saint-Germain.
Despite their efforts, the lingering doubts over the goalkeeping position may prompt United to reassess priorities in the transfer market, particularly if they wish to strengthen before the window closes.
While the team showed signs of improvement under Amorim, their inability to convert opportunities into goals remains a concern. The tactical setup allowed Cunha and Mbeumo to link well, and the 3-4-3 formation provided space for wing-backs Diogo Dalot and Dorgu. However, fine margins ultimately dictated the outcome, with United unable to capitalize on their possession.
The absence of a clinical edge was particularly glaring for Gyökeres, who arrived from Sporting CP for €73 million. Despite high expectations, he failed to register a shot on goal during the match, a stark contrast to his previous performance record. His struggles were a reminder that high-profile signings require time to adapt.
As United prepares for their next matches against Fulham and Burnley ahead of the Manchester City derby on September 14, there is hope for a turnaround. Amorim’s side must build on their performance against Arsenal, as they look to regain the confidence of their supporters. Meanwhile, the future of Rasmus Højlund remains uncertain, with indications that he is not part of Amorim’s immediate plans, possibly leading to a loan move as the transfer window approaches its conclusion.
The season is still in its early stages, and both clubs have much to prove as they work towards their respective goals. Arsenal’s victory marked a strong start in their pursuit of a first Premier League title since 2004, while Manchester United is left to regroup and find solutions to their ongoing challenges.
