Anil Kumble Celebrates Cheteshwar Pujara’s Retirement with Praise

Former Indian captain and coach Anil Kumble has paid tribute to Cheteshwar Pujara, who announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on August 24, 2025. Kumble described Pujara as “a great ambassador of the game,” commending his dedication to the sport and his contributions to the Indian team. In a heartfelt message posted on social media, Kumble expressed pride in Pujara’s achievements, stating, “Congratulations on a fantastic career! You gave it your all for the team! It was a privilege to have worked with you.”
Pujara, aged 37, concludes an illustrious career that saw him participate in 103 Test matches. He last represented India in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia. His retirement marks the end of a significant chapter in Indian cricket, during which he became the country’s eighth-highest run-scorer in Tests, amassing 7,195 runs at an average of 43.60, including 19 centuries and 35 fifties.
On social media, fellow cricketers shared their tributes and congratulations. Suryakumar Yadav, captain of India’s T20I team, conveyed his best wishes via Instagram, calling him “Pujju bhai.” Former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin praised Pujara for his contributions, saying, “Well done Puji. Happy retirement.”
Former opener Virender Sehwag highlighted Pujara’s resilience and hard work, writing on X, “Congratulations on a fabulous test career @cheteshwar1. Your grit, determination and hard work were inspiring.”
Pujara’s career was characterized by his unique ability to bat for extended periods, often wearing down bowlers with his patience and skill. Yuvraj Singh commended Pujara’s commitment, stating, “Someone who always put his mind, body and soul for the country! Many congratulations on an outstanding career, Puji!”
As he transitions into retirement, Pragyan Ojha, a former left-arm spinner, reflected on Pujara’s journey, noting, “Your dedication, wisdom and unwavering professionalism have left a lasting impact on many.” Ojha wished him joy and fulfillment in the next phase of his life.
The cricketing community continues to honor Pujara’s legacy, with former players like Wriddhiman Saha and Wasim Jaffer expressing their admiration. Saha emphasized Pujara’s impact during challenging moments, while Jaffer remarked, “Take a bow on a stellar career @cheteshwar1. You should be mighty proud of what you achieved donning the India cap.”
