University of Kashmir and IUCAA Launch Workshop on AI in Science

The University of Kashmir (KU) and the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) have launched a four-day workshop focused on data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) in physics and astronomy. The event, held at the main campus in Srinagar, commenced on October 7, 2023, and aims to enhance research capabilities in these fields.

The workshop seeks to equip young researchers and students with essential skills in data-driven techniques and AI tools that are increasingly influencing modern research in physical sciences. According to a statement from KU, participants will gain practical knowledge that can be applied to their academic and professional endeavors.

In her opening remarks, Vice Chancellor of KU, Prof Nilofer Khan, emphasized the importance of integrating advanced technologies into academic pursuits. She stated, “Such programmes are vital in equipping our scholars with skills that match the evolving scientific and industrial landscape.” This highlights the university’s commitment to fostering an environment conducive to innovation and research.

During the inaugural session, Prof Ajit Kembhavi, Professor Emeritus at IUCAA, discussed the growing significance of AI in analyzing complex astronomical data. He noted that these technologies are essential for expanding the frontiers of astrophysical research, showcasing how AI is transforming this scientific domain.

The Head of the Department of Physics at KU, Prof Gowhar Bashir, welcomed the participants and acknowledged the crucial support from IUCAA in promoting collaborative learning and research initiatives. This partnership aims to enhance the quality of education and research at the university.

The workshop’s coordinator, Prof Manzoor Malik, who is also a faculty member in the Physics Department, highlighted the importance of developing data-centric and technology-oriented skills. He pointed out that these skills are increasingly demanded in both academia and the job market, reflecting changing industry needs.

The inaugural session attracted a diverse audience, including faculty members, experts from IUCAA, and students from the university.
