Jadavpur University Launches Online Course on India’s Plurality

Jadavpur University, in collaboration with the University of East Anglia, has introduced a month-long online course that explores the diverse aspects of Indian society often overlooked in academic discourse. The course, which began on November 3 and runs until December 5, aims to educate participants about the complexities of India’s plurality and heterogeneity.

Sayantan Dasgupta, a professor in the Department of Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University, emphasized the academic responsibility to address societal realities through education. “This course was started on the understanding that academics have a larger responsibility towards society, and it is important that they meet that responsibility by designing courses that focus on the Indian reality, as indeed the National Education Policy 2020 encourages,” Dasgupta stated.

The initiative is part of a broader movement towards internationalizing education in India, inviting experts from around the globe to contribute their insights. Dasgupta noted that while many participants are from India, they often lack a comprehensive, interdisciplinary understanding of the country and its multilingual dynamics.

Interdisciplinary Focus on Minority Traditions

This course emerges from a collaborative project led by Dasgupta and Jon Cook of the University of East Anglia. It emphasizes the significance of minority traditions, particularly those associated with languages such as Nepali, Lepcha, Bodo, and Kudmali, which are spoken in West Bengal. The project aligns with their commitment to Academic Social Responsibility, aiming to engage communities and promote awareness of endangered linguistic heritage.

A distinctive feature of the course is its interdisciplinary approach to the Humanities. Participants will engage with lectures addressing gender issues, the syncretic nature of Indian civilization, and critical discussions on democracy and decolonization. Dasgupta highlighted the interconnectedness of literature with various fields like history, politics, film, and music, stating, “Literature today is inextricably intertwined with the study of history, politics, film, economics and even music. And vice-versa.”

Preserving Linguistic Diversity

The course also seeks to raise awareness about the myriad linguistic communities in India, many of which are facing the threat of extinction. “It is very important not to lose sight of minority traditions. We have so many linguistic communities in India about which we know so little. Many of them are endangered today; some of them may face extinction soon,” Dasgupta remarked.

By disseminating knowledge of these traditions, the course aspires to educate participants about the rich tapestry of India’s cultural and linguistic diversity. It promises to provide a platform for a deeper understanding of the complexities that shape Indian society, ultimately fostering a more holistic view of the nation for students, researchers, and educators alike.
