India Takes Third Place in Global Machine Learning Research
India has established itself as a leading force in machine learning (ML)–enabled scientific research, ranking third globally in terms of publications, according to the ML Global Impact Report 2025 by Marktechpost. The report reveals that India is rapidly enhancing its position in the field of AI-driven science, trailing only behind China and the United States in ML-related studies published in the Nature family of journals.
The report analyzes over 5,000 relevant scientific articles published between January 1 and September 30, 2025, showcasing India’s remarkable growth in ML-supported scientific output. This surge is attributed to a robust network of universities, research institutions, deep-tech startups, and national laboratories that are leveraging ML to tackle complex challenges in health, agriculture, and climate resilience.
India’s Expanding Influence in Machine Learning Research
Indian researchers are increasingly utilizing popular ML frameworks such as XGBoost, Transformers, ResNet, and U-Net. These tools are being applied in significant domains, including:
– Medical imaging, diagnostics, and genomics
– Climate science and environmental modeling
– Agriculture and crop-yield forecasting
– Materials science and nanotechnology
This comprehensive approach highlights India’s commitment to practical and socially relevant ML research, aligned with national priorities in health and sustainable development.
While China leads in overall research volume and the United States excels in disciplinary diversity, India is on a steep growth trajectory in ML-driven science. The report indicates an increasing number of institutions participating in this field, supported by interdisciplinary research clusters and rising investments in AI applications.
Collaborative Partnerships Strengthening Research Output
India’s scientific output is characterized by extensive collaboration. Most ML-enabled studies involve partnerships between 2 to 15 organizations, connecting various sectors such as academia, medical institutions, and industry. International collaborations are particularly notable, with India forming partnerships with entities in the United States focused on health and genomics, and with Saudi Arabia in materials science.
Dr. Geetha Manjunath, Founder and CEO of NIRAMAI Health Analytix, emphasizes that India’s advancements in ML, particularly in medical applications, are leading to significant improvements in population health. Her company’s Thermalytix® platform exemplifies the potential of ML in developing affordable healthcare technologies, enabling early detection of breast cancer without the need for radiation or compression.
Despite the increasing interest in generative AI models, the report indicates that India’s scientific contributions primarily rely on established ML methods. Classical approaches, including Random Forest and SVMs, account for nearly half of all ML use cases globally, with India focusing on application-oriented tasks that yield immediate results in fields like environmental modeling and agricultural optimization.
India’s third-place ranking in the global ML research landscape underscores its growing influence. The country is not only contributing to but also benefitting from the global ML innovation ecosystem, which is shaped by foundational tools developed in various nations, including the United States and Germany.
In conclusion, India’s ascent in ML-enabled scientific research is a pivotal trend, showcasing its ability to apply machine learning across diverse fields. As highlighted by Asif Razzaq, Editor and Co-Founder of Marktechpost, India’s contributions are firmly establishing it as a key player in the global ML research community. The findings from the ML Global Impact Report 2025 reflect a vibrant and collaborative scientific landscape that is poised to make lasting impacts on both national and global challenges.
