The ICMR–National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) marked its Foundation Day in Hyderabad on March 15, 2024, emphasizing the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in food research. The event attracted a diverse audience, including scientists, academicians, and policymakers, all eager to discuss advancements in nutrition and public health.

Keynote Address Highlights NIN’s Contributions

During the virtual keynote address, Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary of the Department of Health Research and Director General of ICMR, underscored NIN’s pivotal role in revising India’s dietary guidelines. He noted that these guidelines are essential for shaping national nutrition policies. Dr. Bahl emphasized the significance of NIN’s ongoing pan-India nutrition study, which aims to address contemporary health challenges faced by the population.

Dr. Bharti Kulkarni, the Director of NIN, reflected on the institute’s leadership in public health nutrition. She highlighted recent initiatives that align with global nutrition standards and the importance of adapting to changing dietary needs.

AI and Personalized Nutrition: A Path Forward

Dr. Ch. Mohan Rao, President of the Telangana Academy of Sciences, called for the adoption of AI and personalized nutrition tools. He argued that these innovations could significantly help tackle malnutrition and health risks associated with climate change. The use of technology in nutrition is becoming increasingly vital in understanding and addressing these complex issues.

Adding to the discussions, Dr. Anurag Bhargava from Kasturba Medical College delivered the inaugural Foundation Day Oration, focusing on the relationship between nutrition and tuberculosis. His presentation provided compelling evidence that a proper diet can reduce the incidence of this disease, reinforcing the need for nutritional interventions in public health strategies.

The event also featured the launch of maternal nutrition e-modules designed for training frontline workers. This initiative aims to equip those in the field with essential knowledge to improve maternal health outcomes across the country. Additionally, the Infuse Nutrition Innovation Summit brochure was released, showcasing the latest advances in food technology, AI-based nutrition solutions, and diagnostic tools.

Recognizing excellence in the field, the third Tulpule Awards were presented during the Foundation Day ceremony. Dr. Subba Rao M. Gavaravarapu received the award in the senior category, while Dr. Ravindranadh Palika and Dr. Teena Dasi were honored in the junior category, acknowledging their contributions to nutrition science.

The day served as a reminder of the critical intersection of technology and nutrition, with experts advocating for enhanced collaboration to address pressing health challenges. As NIN continues to lead efforts in public health nutrition, its role in shaping future dietary policies remains more important than ever.
