On November 16, 2025, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha celebrated National Press Day at Sukanta Academy in Agartala. The event gathered journalists, media professionals, and dignitaries to emphasize the importance of ethical journalism in a democratic society. Discussions focused on the critical role of a free press and the contemporary challenges faced by the media.
Importance of Ethical Journalism
During the observance, Chief Minister Saha addressed the audience, underscoring the need for ethical journalism in maintaining a well-informed public. He highlighted that the media serves as a vital watchdog in democracy, tasked with holding power accountable and ensuring transparency. This year’s National Press Day theme resonated with the ongoing issues in the media landscape, including misinformation and the need for integrity.
Alongside Dr. Manik Saha, other dignitaries included Dr. P K Chakraborty, Secretary, and Bimbisar Bhattacharjee, Director of the Indian Council for Agriculture (ICA). Their participation reinforced the significance of collaborative efforts in fostering a responsible media environment.
Messages from Other Leaders
In a parallel celebration, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami extended his greetings to journalists, recognizing their role as the “fourth pillar” of democracy. In a post on X, he expressed appreciation for the dedication and courage of media professionals, stating, “For strengthening democracy, it is extremely essential for the fourth pillar to be strong and effective.” He praised their commitment to keeping society informed and accountable.
National Press Day, observed annually on November 16, commemorates the establishment of the Press Council of India, which regulates the news media in the country. This observance not only celebrates the achievements of journalists but also serves as a reminder of the challenges they face in their pursuit of truth and transparency.
On the previous day, Chief Minister Dhami participated in the Dehradun Literature Festival at Doon International School, where he released the book ‘Leading Ladies of India’ by author Venu Agrahara Dhingra. He emphasized the importance of literature as a powerful medium for expressing emotions and fostering social awareness, hoping it would inspire readers, particularly women.
As discussions on the role of the media continue, the observance of National Press Day highlights the vital connection between journalism and democracy, showcasing the commitment of leaders like Dr. Manik Saha and Pushkar Singh Dhami to uphold the principles of a free and responsible press.
