In a significant move to enhance inter-state collaboration, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang met with Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on August 31, 2023. The meeting took place at Tamang’s residence in Bhubaneswar and focused on areas of mutual interest such as tourism, cultural exchange, and disaster management.

Commemorating Statehood and Shared Heritage

During the meeting, CM Tamang presented a specially released Rs 50 commemorative coin to mark Sikkim’s 50th Statehood Anniversary. This gesture serves as a symbol of the historic milestone and the shared spirit of unity and progress between the two states. “It was a great pleasure to meet CM Mohan Charan Majhi. Sharing this symbol of our heritage and collective journey was a moment of pride and joy,” Tamang remarked.

Both leaders acknowledged the natural beauty and cultural richness of Sikkim and Odisha. They expressed a mutual commitment to enhance collaboration, aiming to boost tourism and economic growth in both regions. The meeting also highlighted recent coordination efforts following a road accident in Sikkim in May, which involved tourists from Odisha.

Sources indicate that both chief ministers commended the prompt response of their administrations during the incident and reaffirmed their dedication to ensuring the safety and welfare of tourists visiting their states.

Strengthening Goodwill and Future Initiatives

Following his discussions with CM Majhi, Tamang met with Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati at Raj Bhavan. During this encounter, he reiterated the significance of the commemorative coin, describing it as an opportunity to reflect on the shared values and deepen goodwill between the states. “The occasion was an opportunity to reflect on our shared values of unity and progress while strengthening goodwill between our states,” he stated.

The meetings concluded with both leaders optimistic about expanding cooperation, particularly in the areas of sustainable tourism and fostering deeper cultural ties. Their discussions underscore a commitment to not only enhance inter-state relations but also to work collaboratively for the welfare of their citizens.
