Madani Criticizes Government for Discrimination Against Muslims

Maulana Arshad Madani, president of the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUH), has made significant allegations regarding the treatment of Muslims in India, claiming systemic discrimination by the government. Speaking at the JUH headquarters in New Delhi on Saturday, Madani highlighted the disparity in opportunities for Muslims, contrasting the political success of leaders like Zohran Mamdani and Sadiq Khan—who serve as mayors of New York and London, respectively—with the challenges faced by Muslims in India.

Madani asserted, “While some Muslims can attain high office abroad, in India, they struggle to secure even the position of vice chancellor at universities.” He cited the case of Azam Khan, a prominent politician who has faced legal troubles, suggesting that even those who achieve success face severe repercussions. “Look at what is happening today with Al-Falah. The founder is in jail, and how many years he will spend in jail, no one knows,” he stated.

The founder of Al-Falah University, Jawed Siddiqui, is currently in custody of the Enforcement Directorate amid a probe linked to a recent blast in Delhi. Siddiqui had previously spent over two years in Tihar Jail following a complaint of cheating, but he was acquitted in February 2005 after reaching an agreement to repay the affected parties.

Madani criticized the government for its historical reluctance to support Muslim leadership, claiming that “since the time India gained independence, efforts have been made to prevent Muslims from raising their heads.” He added that this environment has contributed to perceptions of a leadership vacuum within the community.

BJP leaders responded sharply to Madani’s remarks. Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla labeled Madani’s claims as part of an “appeasement” strategy to garner votes. He pointed out that Muslims have held notable positions in India, including president, vice president, and chief justice. BJP member Shahnawaz Hussain also criticized Madani’s statements as “very irresponsible.”

In contrast, some members of the opposition expressed support for Madani’s concerns. Former Congress MP Sandeep Dikshit acknowledged a pattern of systematic discrimination against specific religious groups but clarified that linking the issue solely to Al-Falah was inappropriate. He emphasized the need for an impartial investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the allegations surrounding the university.

Congress leader Rashid Alvi called for accountability in cases of terrorism but cautioned against harming the reputation of an entire institution based on the actions of individuals. “Take strict action against those who are responsible, but that doesn’t mean you destroy the entire university,” Alvi stated.

Madani’s statements have ignited a broader discussion about the status of Muslim communities in India, highlighting ongoing tensions regarding political representation and community support. The discourse continues to evolve as various political factions respond to these contentious issues.
