East Coast Railway Urges Safety Over Social Media Stunts
The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has issued a significant advisory urging the public to prioritize safety during the festive season, emphasizing the dangers of risky social media stunts near railway tracks. This initiative aims to combat the increasing trend of individuals taking selfies and creating videos in hazardous locations, which poses a considerable risk to personal safety and railway operations.
Safety Advisory Highlights Risks
As part of its ongoing efforts to ensure safe travel for millions of passengers, ECoR has launched an awareness campaign directed particularly at the youth and social media users. The advisory warns against taking selfies, filming videos, or performing stunts on or near railway tracks, platforms, or moving trains. Officials highlighted that such reckless behavior is not only life-threatening but also constitutes a punishable offence under Sections 147 and 153 of the Railways Act, 1989, which can result in imprisonment and financial penalties for offenders.
To enforce this advisory, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP) have been instructed to adopt a strict “Zero Tolerance” policy towards violations. Individuals caught engaging in dangerous activities, such as trespassing, leaning out of trains, or travelling on footboards, will face stringent legal consequences. ECoR stressed the importance of recognizing that railway premises are not meant for entertainment and that a moment of carelessness could lead to tragic outcomes.
“A moment of carelessness for a video can cost a life,”
ECoR cautioned in its advisory, urging parents and educators to guide young people away from such perilous actions.
Public Cooperation Essential for Safe Travel
In addition to addressing dangerous behaviors, ECoR has appealed for public cooperation in maintaining order and discipline at railway stations during the busy festive period. To manage the surge in passenger numbers, the railway has introduced 367 special trains, enhanced station security with additional RPF and GRP personnel, and established 24×7 control rooms for real-time monitoring of passenger movement.
Passengers are encouraged to maintain orderly queues at station entrances, ticket counters, and while boarding trains. They should avoid rushing, pushing, or crowding near platforms, Foot Over Bridges (FOBs), and escalators to ensure a smooth flow of movement. ECoR has also reminded travelers to cooperate with railway staff and security personnel, arrive well in advance, follow announcements, and utilize designated waiting areas to prevent overcrowding.
In light of safety concerns, passengers are advised to remain vigilant, secure their belongings, and promptly report any unattended luggage or suspicious activity to the nearest RPF officer or through the Railway Helpline No. 139. By adhering to these guidelines, travelers can contribute to a safer environment for themselves and fellow passengers during this festive season.
