R Ashwin Reflects on IPL Retirement, Lauds MS Dhoni’s Longevity

Veteran spinner R Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), citing physical demands as a key factor in his decision. In a recent discussion on his YouTube channel, Ashwin expressed that he no longer possesses the stamina required for the intense three-month season, ultimately leading him to conclude his IPL career.
Ashwin, who recently returned to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the 2025 season, did not have the season he had hoped for, finishing with seven wickets across nine matches. Reflecting on his time in the league, he openly acknowledged the challenges of maintaining peak performance as players age. He specifically commended MS Dhoni, who continues to participate in the IPL at the age of 43, for his unwavering commitment.
“As you grow older, the bandwidth to play IPL becomes less,” Ashwin noted, emphasizing the physical toll the tournament takes. He further elaborated, “I was thinking if I can play IPL next year. Three months of IPL is a little too much for me. It’s draining. This is one of the reasons why I’m awe-struck by seeing someone like MS Dhoni.”
A Legacy in Numbers
Ashwin’s IPL journey began in 2009 with CSK, spanning 221 matches, making him the seventh most capped player in the tournament’s history. He has taken 187 wickets, boasting an economy rate of 7.20. Over the years, he has played for multiple franchises, including Rising Pune Supergiants, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals. His impact on the game has been significant, with a reputation as a trendsetter and a vital player during powerplay overs.
In his retirement announcement, Ashwin hinted at the possibility of participating in other global cricket leagues or even taking on a coaching role in the IPL. His future plans suggest that while he may be stepping away from the IPL, his passion for the game remains strong.
Dhoni’s Future Remains Uncertain
As for MS Dhoni, he continues to defy expectations by playing in the IPL without officially announcing his retirement. There is ongoing speculation regarding his participation in the next season, especially as he aims for a smooth transition for the team. Dhoni has previously stated that he intends to conclude his IPL career with CSK, leaving room for fans to hope for one last appearance on the field.
Nevertheless, his recent struggles with a knee injury may impact his decision-making. Dhoni has indicated that he will take his time before making a final call on his career, keeping his plans closely guarded.
As the IPL landscape evolves, the contributions of players like Ashwin and Dhoni will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy in the world of cricket.
