Gujarat Schools Integrate Bhagavad Gita into Language Curriculum

In a notable educational development, the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has included chapters from the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita in first language textbooks for students in Classes 9 to 12 this academic year. This decision aims to enhance the moral and ethical framework of education in the state, aligning with the broader objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The integration involves the addition of two chapters each in the first language textbooks for Gujarati, Hindi, English, and Urdu. This initiative reflects the Gujarat government’s commitment to embedding traditional Indian knowledge systems within the contemporary educational landscape. The move follows the introduction of a supplementary textbook on the Bhagavad Gita for Classes 6 to 8 last year, which aimed to connect younger students with India’s rich cultural heritage.
Details of the Curriculum Changes
According to an education department official, while the chapters have been directly incorporated into the Gujarati textbooks, supplementary booklets have been prepared for Hindi, English, and Urdu languages. The new Hindi curriculum now includes chapters such as “Margdarshika Gita” and “Bhagavad Gita Aur Main” for Class 9, followed by “Samarpan” and “Desh Bhakti Ki Sanjeevani” for Class 10. Classes 11 and 12 feature “Param Sukh Ke Sopan” and “Triveni,” and “Vaishvik Granth — Shrimad Bhagavad Gita” and “Bharatiya Shashwat Moolya Aur Gita,” respectively.
These educational resources have been accompanied by a revised exam blueprint. The new examination structure for Classes 9 to 12 will now include questions worth 3-4 marks that are directly related to this content. This change is part of a broader effort to revise the curriculum, ensuring that students are equipped with relevant knowledge and perspectives.
Additional Curriculum Enhancements
In addition to the inclusion of the Bhagavad Gita, the GSHSEB has introduced a chapter on natural farming in the Class 12 economics syllabus. This aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices among students. Furthermore, the computer studies curriculum for Classes 9 to 12 is undergoing revision to keep pace with technological advancements.
While the new examination format will be implemented immediately, entirely new textbooks are expected to be introduced for Classes 9 and 11 starting next academic year. These forthcoming materials will include contemporary topics such as artificial intelligence, further enhancing the educational experience for students in Gujarat.
