Assam Rifles Combats Drug Trafficking and Promotes Unity
The Assam Rifles took significant steps in promoting unity and tackling drug trafficking in the Northeast region of India. On November 19, 2023, as part of the National Integration Day celebrations, the force reaffirmed its commitment to fostering harmony in Agartala. The event saw participation from fifteen civilians and 272 students from the Assam Rifles Public School, emphasizing the importance of national integration.
National Integration Day commemorates the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The celebrations aimed to encourage a sense of unity among diverse communities, instilling pride in national identity. Activities included awareness programs, interactive discussions, and motivational talks designed to inspire young minds and create a strong sense of social cohesion. By engaging with local communities, the Assam Rifles continues to promote peaceful coexistence throughout the region.
Significant Drug Seizures and Operations
In a parallel effort against narcotics trafficking, the Assam Rifles made a substantial breakthrough on November 17, 2023. In a joint operation with the Customs Department, the force seized 800 grams of high-grade cocaine in Agartala, valued at approximately Rs 8 crore. This operation is notable as one of the largest cocaine recoveries in recent months, highlighting the commitment of the Assam Rifles to combat drug-related issues in the region.
The successful operation was based on credible intelligence and led to the apprehension of two individuals involved in trafficking. The Assam Rifles emphasized their determination to create a drug-free society, particularly for the youth of the Northeast, as they continue to implement effective measures to curb narcotics trafficking.
Destruction of Illicit Poppy Cultivation
In a related effort to combat drug production, the Assam Rifles, in collaboration with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Manipur Police, destroyed approximately 25 acres of illicit poppy cultivation in the Kangpokpi District of Manipur. This operation, conducted on November 18, 2023, targeted fields that had the potential to yield over 170 kilograms of opium, worth several crores of rupees.
The operation was initiated based on intelligence reports regarding illicit activities in the area. Despite challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions, the forces successfully located and dismantled the poppy fields. An official statement noted that these efforts reflect the Assam Rifles’ unwavering resolve to dismantle the financial networks that support insurgency and other anti-national activities.
Through these initiatives, the Assam Rifles not only fight against narcotics trafficking but also contribute to building a cohesive society in the Northeast. Their dual efforts reinforce the importance of unity and security in the region, ensuring a brighter future for its youth and communities.
