Veteran Actor Pankaj Dheer Dies at 68 After Cancer Battle

Veteran Bollywood and television actor Pankaj Dheer has passed away in Mumbai on October 15, 2025, following a prolonged struggle with cancer. The 68-year-old actor was best known for his iconic role as Karna in B.R. Chopra‘s acclaimed series Mahabharat. His death marks a significant loss for the entertainment industry, where he was celebrated for his powerful performances and dignified presence.
Dheer had been undergoing treatment for cancer for an extended period. After initially responding well to therapy, the disease relapsed a few months before his passing, leading to critical health complications. Reports indicate that he underwent major surgery as part of his treatment plan. As tributes pour in from fans and colleagues, Dheer is fondly remembered for his humility and dedication both on and off the screen.
Understanding Cancer Relapse
Cancer relapse occurs when cancerous cells, which might remain dormant after treatment, become active again. According to Dr. Minish Jain, Director of Medical Oncology at Ruby Hall Clinic, this phenomenon presents significant challenges in oncology. He explains, “Cancer relapse is one of the most challenging realities in oncology. After treatment, a few cancer cells might remain in the body, staying dormant for a while. When these cells become active again, the disease reappears.” Early detection is crucial for improving outcomes during a relapse.
Warning Signs of Recurrence
Recognizing the early signs of cancer recurrence is vital for timely intervention. Dr. Jain emphasizes that individuals who have undergone cancer treatment should be vigilant for the following symptoms:
– Persistent tiredness or fatigue
– Unexplained weight loss
– Swelling or pain near the original cancer site
– Chronic cough, breathlessness, or loss of appetite
– Reappearance of symptoms associated with the initial diagnosis
Any unusual or ongoing changes in health should be discussed with an oncologist promptly for further evaluation.
While relapses cannot always be prevented, patients can adopt proactive health management strategies. Regular follow-ups, routine scans, and blood tests are essential for early detection. Furthermore, lifestyle choices significantly influence recovery. A balanced diet, consistent exercise, effective stress management, and avoiding substances like alcohol and tobacco can enhance the immune system, aiding in recovery.
Pankaj Dheer gained substantial fame through his role in Mahabharat (1988–1990), a landmark series in Indian television history. He also appeared in numerous Bollywood films, including Sadak, Baadshah, Soldier, and Mr. India. His legacy continues through his son, Nikitin Dheer, known for roles in films such as Chennai Express and Shershaah.
As the news of his passing spreads, many in the industry are sharing condolences and memories, highlighting Dheer’s inspiring personality and the impact he made on audiences over the years.
