Nutritionist Identifies 6 Foods That May Lower Breast Cancer Risk

As breast cancer cases continue to rise globally, nutritionist Leema Mahajan emphasizes the potential of dietary changes in reducing the risk of this disease. Her recent recommendations highlight six science-backed foods that women can incorporate into their diets to help lower their chances of developing breast cancer.
The Importance of Diet in Cancer Prevention
Breast cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the breast grow uncontrollably, forming tumors that can spread to other parts of the body. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 670,000 lives were lost to breast cancer worldwide in 2022, with cases continuing to rise. Mahajan stresses that the right dietary choices can play a significant role in prevention, stating, “Starting these foods early in life will help prevent your chances of developing this disease.”
Six Foods to Include for Risk Reduction
Mahajan identifies six foods that, when consumed regularly, may offer protective benefits against breast cancer:
1. Pomegranates – Rich in ellagitannins, these fruits are known to inhibit the multiplication of cancer cells and reduce estrogen-driven growth. Mahajan recommends consuming one cup of fresh pomegranate daily.
2. Cruciferous Vegetables – Vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage contain sulforaphane, which aids the liver in detoxifying harmful estrogen by-products. Mahajan advises eating these vegetables lightly cooked or raw at least three to four times a week.
3. Soy and Dal – Rich in isoflavones, these plant-based foods act as mild estrogens that can help balance hormone levels, potentially reducing breast cancer risk by 30 percent. Mahajan suggests consuming soybeans and their byproducts two to three times a week.
4. Amla or Guava – Both fruits are high in vitamin C, which combats oxidative stress and assists in repairing DNA damage. Mahajan recommends eating one vitamin C-rich fruit daily for its antioxidant benefits.
5. Olive Oil – This oil is known for its polyphenols, which can lower inflammation, protect healthy cells, and slow tumor growth. Mahajan suggests incorporating one teaspoon of extra-virgin olive oil daily into meals.
6. Flaxseeds – High in lignans, a type of phytoestrogen, flaxseeds help to balance estrogen levels and slow the growth of breast cancer cells. Mahajan indicates that just one tablespoon of ground flaxseed can significantly reduce breast cancer tumor markers.
These foods, Mahajan emphasizes, should be introduced early in life to maximize their preventive effects. With breast cancer now the most common cancer among women globally, the significance of lifestyle and dietary habits cannot be overstated.
