Kerala Health Officials Address Swimming Pool Safety Amid Meningoencephalitis Cases
The State Public Health Department of Tamil Nadu has confirmed that there are no restrictions on the use of private and public swimming pools in Chennai, despite recent cases of amoebic meningoencephalitis reported in Kerala. Officials emphasized that there is no need for public panic but advised swimmers to remain vigilant about potential symptoms.
Officials highlighted the importance of awareness regarding symptoms associated with amoebic meningoencephalitis. Individuals who exhibit signs such as fever, body pain, vomiting, dizziness, or stiffness in the neck within three days of swimming should seek immediate medical attention.
Safety Guidelines for Swimmers
To ensure the safety of swimmers, the department has issued specific recommendations. It is advised to avoid swimming in pools that show signs of algae deposition. Additionally, hotels and public facilities are required to maintain proper hygiene standards. This includes draining pool water twice daily and ensuring adequate disinfection using chlorine.
The guidelines stipulate that pools, especially in high-risk areas, must maintain a chlorine level above two parts per million (ppm). This is crucial for preventing the spread of waterborne diseases, particularly in light of the current health concerns.
Moreover, the department has urged parents to prevent children from swimming, bathing, or playing in polluted or stagnant water bodies in rural areas. Such environments pose a significant risk of exposure to harmful pathogens. It has also been recommended that schoolchildren consume only boiled water to mitigate health risks.
Monitoring and Preventive Measures
The Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine is actively monitoring the situation. District health officials have been instructed to implement disease-prevention measures and ensure compliance with safety protocols in swimming facilities.
Public health officials continue to emphasize the importance of community awareness and preventive actions to safeguard public health during this period. As the situation evolves, the health department remains committed to disseminating information and guidance to the public.
