Kerala ADGP Mahipal Yadav Dies Days Before Retirement
The Kerala Additional Director General of Police, Mahipal Yadav, passed away on August 27, 2023, just days before his scheduled retirement on August 30. Yadav, a 1997-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, succumbed to a brain tumour while receiving treatment in a private hospital in Jaipur. His death occurred on the same day the Kerala Police were preparing an official farewell in his honour.
Originally from Alwar, Rajasthan, Yadav’s health had deteriorated in recent weeks, prompting his family to admit him to the hospital. Throughout his distinguished career, he held numerous significant positions, including Kochi City Police Commissioner, Inspector General of the Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram ranges, Managing Director of the Kerala State Beverages Corporation, and Excise Commissioner.
Yadav was appointed as ADGP for Crimes but had been on medical leave prior to his passing. His work extended beyond state duties; he served on central deputation with both the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Notably, he led investigations into high-profile cases, such as the VVIP AgustaWestland helicopter scam and the inquiry into assets linked to Mulayam Singh Yadav. In 2018, he was appointed Inspector General of the BSF Punjab Frontier in Jalandhar.
Yadav was a recipient of the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service, reflecting his commitment to duty and integrity. Colleagues described him as a firm yet compassionate leader, admired for his administrative efficiency and dedication to social responsibility. His initiatives to enhance transparency within the excise administration and the Beverages Corporation were particularly commended.
In a heartfelt condolence message, Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed deep sorrow over Yadav’s passing, stating, “Through his integrity and leadership, he remained an exemplary figure and a model for others to emulate. His demise is an irreparable loss.” Tributes have poured in from various leaders, colleagues, and officials across the state, all mourning the loss of the respected officer.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by Yadav’s family in the coming days, as the community reflects on the profound impact he had throughout his career and his commitment to public service.
