Debunking the Myth: Chewing Gum Does Not Stay in Stomach for Years
The belief that swallowed chewing gum remains in the stomach for seven years is a widely held myth. Recent insights from medical professionals clarify that this notion lacks scientific support and may cause unnecessary concern among consumers, particularly parents of young children.
Chewing Gum: A Long-Standing Habit
The practice of chewing gum dates back to the Stone Age, with evidence suggesting that various forms of gum have been enjoyed by humans for millennia. Today, the global market for chewing gum is substantial, contributing significantly to the overall $21 billion USD candy industry. The modern chewing gum concoction typically combines natural and synthetic gums, resins, flavorings, and sweeteners like corn syrup and sugar, aiming to attract a youthful audience.
Despite its popularity, particularly among children aged 6-14, concerns regarding the safety of swallowing gum persist. This has led to the proliferation of the myth that swallowed gum remains in the digestive system for an extended period.
Scientific Insights on Digestion
Experts in the field of medicine, including Nancy McGreal, MD from Duke Health, have examined this myth. Dr. McGreal explains that while the gum base is indeed insoluble and not digestible by the human body, it does not adhere to the stomach lining or intestines. Instead, swallowed gum follows the same digestive path as food and is eventually excreted in stool.
Dr. McGreal further asserts that even in extreme cases, it is unlikely for gum to remain in the stomach for seven years. She notes, “In all the upper endoscopies I have done in both children and adults, I have yet to see a wad of gum lying around in the stomach.”
The Mayo Clinic also supports this view, indicating that while rare instances of intestinal blockage can occur—particularly when large amounts of gum are swallowed in conjunction with constipation—these cases are not common. Medical professionals recommend that while occasional swallowing of gum is generally harmless, it should not be a routine practice.
In conclusion, the myth surrounding chewing gum and its supposed longevity in the human digestive system is unfounded. Understanding the reality can help alleviate concerns among parents and consumers. Chewing gum remains a popular treat, and while moderation is advised, the fear of it lingering in the body for years is simply a misconception.
