Veteran Actor Achyut Potdar Passes Away at 91, Tributes Pour In
Achyut Potdar, a celebrated figure in Hindi and Marathi cinema and television, has passed away at the age of 91. He died at his home in Thane, Mumbai, on August 18, 2025, following a series of health complications. Potdar had recently been admitted to Jupiter Hospital in Thane, where he received treatment for his ailments.
His final rites are scheduled for August 19 in Mumbai. The news of his passing has prompted an outpouring of grief from fans and fellow actors alike. Among those paying tribute is filmmaker Hansal Mehta, who expressed his admiration for Potdar on social media.
Mehta recalled his fondness for Potdar’s role as Jaggu dada’s father in the film Angaar, noting that the line “Ae Jaggu” made him a lifelong fan. He described the privilege of directing Potdar in his debut film Jayate, where Potdar portrayed a professional medical witness with remarkable comedic timing and a sharp sense of humor.
Celebrated Career and Iconic Roles
Achyut Potdar became a household name for his memorable portrayal of an engineering professor in Aamir Khan‘s blockbuster 3 Idiots. Although his appearance was brief, it left a lasting impression, leading to numerous viral memes and becoming a favorite among social media influencers.
His extensive body of work includes notable films such as Aakrosh, Ardh Satya, Tezaab, and Parinda. Potdar’s talent also extended to popular titles like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Dilwale, Yeh Dillagi, and Lagaan. His diverse performances showcased his versatility and depth as an actor.
Before embarking on his acting career in the 1980s, Potdar served in the Indian Armed Forces, retiring as a captain in 1967. He later worked with the Indian Oil Company before transitioning to the film and television industry, where he garnered immense respect and admiration for his work.
