Usha Nadkarni Declines Gully Boy Audition, Criticizes Zoya Akhtar
Veteran actress Usha Nadkarni has publicly declined an audition for the acclaimed film Gully Boy, directed by Zoya Akhtar. Nadkarni, known for her roles in various television dramas, expressed her discontent over being asked to audition, asserting that after decades in the industry, she no longer feels the need to prove herself in that manner.
Nadkarni shared her experience in a candid interview with Pinkvilla, revealing that a young individual contacted her regarding the audition. During the conversation, she learned that he was just 25 years old. In a forceful response, Nadkarni stated, “I’ve been working for longer than your mother has been alive. I don’t do such frivolous work as auditioning.”
Critique of Industry Practices
The actress’s comments did not stop there; she also criticized Akhtar, referring to her as “bade baap ki beti,” a phrase that translates to “daughter of a rich man.” Nadkarni urged the assistant director to “Google my name” to understand her extensive body of work before making such requests. “Put my name on the computer and then you would know how much work I have done,” she emphasized, highlighting her seasoned career in the Indian film and television industry.
Nadkarni’s frustrations extend beyond just her own experiences. She criticized the younger generation of assistant directors, claiming they often lack proper etiquette and respect. “First see the stature of the person and then ask them to audition,” she remarked. Nadkarni stands by her perspective, asserting that being labeled arrogant does not change her conviction.
Reflecting on her past work, Nadkarni contrasted her audition experience with a positive interaction on the set of Rustom, where she was offered a role without being asked to audition. “They called me, explained what I had to do, and gave me the part. They didn’t ask me to audition, and I was paid for my work. That’s how it should be,” she stated.
Impact of Gully Boy
Released in 2019, Gully Boy starred prominent actors such as Alia Bhatt, Siddhant Chaturvedi, and Ranveer Singh and received critical acclaim, sweeping several awards. Nadkarni’s comments have sparked discussions about the audition practices within the film industry, especially concerning seasoned actors who feel their experience merits a different approach.
As the conversation continues, Nadkarni’s stance sheds light on the generational divide and evolving expectations in the acting profession. With her longstanding career and numerous contributions to Indian cinema, her voice serves as a reminder of the respect and recognition that veteran actors seek in a rapidly changing industry.
