Ranbir Kapoor and Rajkumar Hirani’s Next Film Delayed to 2027

Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani and actor Ranbir Kapoor are experiencing a significant delay in their much-anticipated collaboration, which is now scheduled to commence in 2027. The project, a biopic centered on an athlete, has been put on hold as Hirani shifts his focus to another production featuring Aamir Khan.
The duo previously achieved tremendous success with the film Sanju, released in 2018, which chronicled the life of actor Sanjay Dutt and grossed an impressive ₹588.5 crore worldwide. Since then, fans have eagerly awaited their next venture together. Reports indicate that while Hirani and Kapoor were enthusiastic about this new project, scheduling conflicts have led to the decision to postpone filming.
According to a source quoted by Times Now, “Hirani and Ranbir were very excited about this one; they had been jamming on it through the year. Hirani decided to park it. Ranbir’s calendar is packed, so it made sense to regroup later. Everyone wants it to be like Sanju, so they’re okay to wait.” This highlights the commitment both parties have to ensure that their next project meets high expectations.
In the meantime, Hirani will concentrate on a biopic of Dadasaheb Phalke, a pioneer of Indian cinema, featuring Aamir Khan in the lead role. The film is slated to begin shooting in January 2026. The source added, “He’s growing out his look and will dive straight into workshops in December. This is the first time he’s playing a real-life pioneer of cinema, and Hirani wants to give it the grandeur it deserves.”
Hirani recently expressed his admiration for Kapoor, saying, “Ranbir is an absolute sweetheart. We had a great time making Sanju. I would definitely love to do another film with him. There are a few scripts with me, and we are in touch. So let’s see where this goes.” His enthusiasm for collaborating with Kapoor suggests that their eventual reunion may yield another compelling cinematic experience.
As for Ranbir Kapoor, he is currently engaged in the production of Ramayana Part 1, where he portrays the character of Ram. The film also stars Sai Pallavi as Sita, with Yash taking on the role of Ravana. Additional cast members include Sunny Deol and Kajal Aggarwal, among others. Ramayana Part 1 is set for a worldwide release on Diwali 2026, with Part 2 expected to follow on Diwali 2027.
The delay of Hirani and Kapoor’s collaboration may be disappointing for fans, but the anticipation remains high for both their next project and the upcoming films in which they are involved.
