Mohanlal’s Ravanaprabhu Re-Release Sparks Joy Across Kerala
The re-release of the 2001 film Ravanaprabhu has ignited excitement among fans of Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, marking a celebratory moment in theatres across Kerala. After 24 years, the beloved film has returned, prompting enthusiastic crowds to transform cinema halls into vibrant spaces of dance and cheer. The re-release has received an overwhelmingly positive response, showcasing the enduring popularity of both the film and its lead actor.
Fans flocked to theatres, creating a festive atmosphere that has quickly gone viral on social media. The film primarily launched in Kerala, with select screenings in Bengaluru, a city with a significant Malayalee population. Early reports indicate that Ravanaprabhu achieved one of the largest pre-sales for a re-release in the region, with several theatres reporting full houses. For instance, the Kavitha Theatre in Ernakulam hosted two full shows in its 1,130-seat capacity, alongside similar packed screenings in Thrissur, Kottayam, and Trivandrum.
The film’s plot follows Karthikeyan, a businessman portrayed by Mohanlal, who is determined to reclaim his family’s ancestral home. This dual role showcases Mohanlal’s range as he also plays Mangalassery Neelakandan. The narrative intertwines personal and familial struggles, as Karthikeyan’s adversary, Shekharan, is played by Napoleon. The film not only serves as a sequel to the classic Devaasuram (1993) but also features a strong supporting cast, including Vasundhara Das, Siddique, and Innocent.
Originally released on August 31, 2001, Ravanaprabhu garnered critical acclaim and commercial success, grossing over ₹15 crores during its theatrical run, making it the highest-grossing Malayalam film of that year. Its re-release has reignited interest, drawing both nostalgic fans and new audiences eager to experience its magic on the big screen.
In 2025, Mohanlal has enjoyed a remarkable year, marked by the release of three films. Starting with L2: Empuraan, which became a blockbuster, he followed up with Thudarum, a family drama that broke box office records. Although his Onam release, Hridayapoorvam, received average reviews, the actor’s momentum continues with the upcoming bilingual film Vrusshabha, set to premiere on November 6, 2025.
As fans celebrate the return of Ravanaprabhu, the energy and excitement surrounding Mohanlal’s work highlight the actor’s strong connection with his audience and the enduring appeal of his films. This re-release not only reinforces his status in the industry but also serves as a reminder of the cultural significance of cinema in bringing communities together.
