The release of Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, featuring Kalyani Priyadarshan as India’s first female superhero, has sparked significant acclaim. However, during its inception, the project faced skepticism from some of its most notable supporters, including Kalyani’s father, acclaimed filmmaker Priyadarshan, and veteran actor Mammootty, who expressed concerns about the ambitious venture.

In a candid interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, actor Dulquer Salmaan shared insights into those initial worries. He recounted a conversation with Priyadarshan, who questioned Kalyani’s decision to embark on such a risky project. “He couldn’t believe it. He asked her, ‘What were you thinking? Why take such a risk?’” Dulquer recalled. He admitted that he too was uncertain, stating, “I just believed in the concept. It felt right.”

The high budget and the expectations surrounding the film heightened anxieties not just within the families but also among the cast and crew. Dulquer reflected on his father’s apprehensions as well. “My dad was concerned too. Everyone thought we might be a bit crazy,” he said, underscoring the pressure that came with developing a female-led superhero narrative.

Despite the initial doubts, both Dulquer and Kalyani have recognized a shift in perspective since the film’s release. Dulquer noted, “Now, they’re very proud. I think we’ve earned some freedom to make the kind of films we want. They’re starting to believe we know what we’re doing.”

For Kalyani, the journey of making Lokah has been profoundly personal. She shared her father’s message following the film’s success, which resonated deeply with her. “The first message he sent after the film’s success was, ‘Don’t let success go to your head, and don’t let failure break your heart.’ He says it often, but this time it felt like a special reminder,” she explained, highlighting the balance between celebrating achievements and staying grounded.

The family dynamics play a crucial role in the emotional landscape of the film. Dulquer also mentioned how Priyadarshan worries about Kalyani’s safety while performing action scenes, given her previous experience in action-oriented roles. “Her dad is adorable. He worries she might get hurt doing all these action scenes,” he said, reflecting the protective instincts of a father towards his daughter.

Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra is produced by Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films and marks a significant milestone in Indian cinema as it introduces a female superhero. The film is the first installment in a planned five-part series, featuring a talented ensemble cast including Naslen, Sandy, and Arun Kurian. Notable cameos include Dulquer himself, as well as Tovino Thomas, Soubin, Anna Ben, and a key voice role by Mammootty.

As Lokah continues to garner attention, it not only showcases Kalyani’s talent but also emphasizes the importance of supporting innovative storytelling in an industry often dominated by traditional narratives. The film’s success is a testament to the evolving landscape of Indian cinema and the growing acceptance of diverse narratives.
