Western Railway Launches All-Women Traction Maintenance Team in Mumbai
Western Railway has taken a bold step towards gender inclusivity by establishing an all-women traction maintenance team in Mumbai, marking a significant shift in a sector traditionally dominated by men. This initiative not only empowers female technicians but also showcases their skills in maintaining critical infrastructure essential for the city’s transportation network.
Empowering Women in Technical Roles
Nearly 100 female technicians and supervisors have been deployed across key hubs, including the EMU carsheds at Mumbai Central, Kandivali, and Virar. These locations are responsible for the upkeep of 112 Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) rakes, which form the backbone of Mumbai’s suburban rail network. According to Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, these local trains are powered by advanced 3-phase AC (25 kV) technology and require rigorous maintenance every 60 and 240 days. This includes up to 45 critical checks covering safety clearances, lubrication, and battery inspections.
“These women are not just participants; they are leading the way in ensuring that our rakes operate with maximum safety and efficiency,” an official stated. “They have consistently demonstrated technical prowess and an unwavering commitment to achieving zero failure operations.”
Pioneering All-Women Traction Team
A highlight of this initiative is the formation of Mumbai’s first all-women traction maintenance team at the Mahalaxmi Traction Substation. This pioneering group is tasked with maintaining complex 25 kV and 110 kV AC Traction equipment, which is essential for uninterrupted suburban train services. The team has undergone intensive training in high-voltage safety protocols and has now assumed full operational responsibilities at the substation.
“This initiative reflects a paradigm shift — not just within the railways but in societal mindsets,” a senior official commented. “It sends a strong message that competence, not gender, defines one’s ability to handle high-stakes responsibilities.”
Moreover, the formation of this team represents a milestone for Western Railway, demonstrating its progressive vision and commitment to diversity in technical and operational domains. By empowering women to take on leadership roles in critical infrastructure, Western Railway is paving the way for a more inclusive future.
As the initiative gains traction, it is expected to inspire similar efforts across various sectors, reinforcing the idea that skill and dedication are universal qualities, transcending gender barriers.
