Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially inaugurate the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on October 8, 2023. This state-of-the-art greenfield airport, constructed at a cost of Rs 19,647 crore, will serve as the second major airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, complementing the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

The inauguration marks a significant milestone for the region, with commercial flight operations anticipated to commence in December 2023. The airport recently received its aerodrome license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on September 30, paving the way for these operations.

Details of the Inauguration

The project is being developed in multiple phases by Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd, with the Adani Group holding a 74 percent stake and the remaining 26 percent owned by the Maharashtra City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). Following a media briefing, CIDCO Vice Chairman and Managing Director Vijay Singhal confirmed the inauguration details, stating that the Prime Minister is scheduled to arrive at the new airport around 14:40 local time. He will spend approximately two hours at the facility, during which he will tour the terminal building and address attendees.

Singhal expressed optimism about the airport’s impact on the region, emphasizing its potential to enhance connectivity and contribute to economic development. The inauguration is expected to attract significant attention, heralding a new chapter for air travel in the Mumbai area.

As preparations for the ceremony continue, the atmosphere surrounding the airport’s opening reflects a broader vision for infrastructure development in India. The Navi Mumbai International Airport aims to support the increasing air traffic demands in the region and facilitate smoother travel experiences for both domestic and international passengers.

The event on October 8 not only symbolizes a major investment in local infrastructure but also highlights the collaborative efforts between public and private sectors in advancing India’s aviation landscape.
