Delhi Cabinet Approves Reorganization of Revenue Districts

The Delhi Cabinet has approved a significant restructuring of the national capital’s administrative framework by reorganising its 11 revenue districts into 13 distinct districts. This decision aims to enhance governance and streamline public services, aligning the new districts with the existing 12 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) zones, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), and the Delhi Cantonment Board.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized the importance of this change, stating, “Governance will be more streamlined.” She described the initiative as a step towards creating a unified administrative boundary that simplifies interactions between the government and residents. The motto, “One Delhi, One Boundary, One Window,” encapsulates the objective of making government services more accessible.

Details of the New Districts

According to a press release from the Delhi government’s Revenue Department, the newly established districts will include: South East, Old Delhi, North, New Delhi, Central, Central North, South West, Outer North, North West, North East, East, South, and West. The official notification is expected to be published within 15 days, with plans for the new districts to be fully operational by December 2025.

The initial budget allocated for this restructuring is set at Rs 25 crore for the current financial year. This reform aims to resolve long-standing jurisdictional disputes between revenue districts and MCD zones, increasing the number of subdivisions from 33 to 39, and expanding the number of Sub-Registrar offices from 22 to 39.

Impact on Public Services

The Delhi government plans to establish Mini Secretariats in all 13 districts to provide a one-stop solution for public services. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the ease of living for residents, speed up service delivery, and improve coordination across various departments, including land records, property registration, civic services, and grievance redressal.

The new district configurations will see specific areas assigned to each district. For instance, the South East district will include Jangpura, Kalkaji, and Badarpur. The Old Delhi district will comprise Sadar Bazar and Chandni Chowk, while the North district will encompass Burari, Adarsh Nagar, and Badli. New Delhi will consist of Delhi Cantt and New Delhi.

Central Delhi will include Patel Nagar and Karol Bagh, whereas Central North will incorporate Sakur Basti, Shalimar Bagh, and Model Town. The South West district will cover Najafgarh, Matiala, Dwarka, and Bijwasan. Outer North will consist of Mundka, Narela, and Bawana, while North West will include Kirari, Nangloi Jat, and Rohini. The North East district will encompass Karawal Nagar, Gokal Puri, Yamuna Vihar, and Shahdara. East Delhi will be made up of Gandhi Nagar, Vishwas Nagar, and Patparganj. The South district will include Chhatarpur, Malviya Nagar, Deoli, and Mehrauli, while West Delhi will consist of Vikaspuri, Janakpuri, and Rajouri Garden.
