Protests Erupt in Goa Following Brutal Attack on Activist

Protests erupted in Goa on March 15, 2024, following the brutal attack on social activist Rama Kankonkar the previous day. The incident, which occurred in broad daylight, has sparked widespread outrage, with thousands gathering outside the Director General of Police’s office in Panaji. Goa’s Chief Minister Pramod Sawant condemned the attack, stating that such incidents would not be tolerated. He ordered a comprehensive investigation and directed the police to take prompt action. In a statement, North Goa Superintendent of Police Rahul Gupta confirmed the swift arrests of five suspects, all of whom have prior criminal records. A manhunt is currently underway for the sixth suspect, who remains at large.

The brutal assault has ignited a political firestorm in Goa, with opposition leaders and social activists visiting Kankonkar at Goa Medical College. Among those who called on him were opposition leader Yuri Alemayehu, Goa Forward president Vijay Sardesai, and AAP president Amit Palekar. Their presence underscores the growing concerns over the state’s law and order situation and the rising violence against activists.
