Modi Expresses Condolences to Nepal’s Interim PM Karki Amid Protests
Prime Minister Narendra Modi communicated with Sushila Karki, the Prime Minister of Nepal’s interim government, on Thursday to express his condolences for the tragic loss of lives during recent protests led by the Gen Z movement. In a statement posted on X, Modi emphasized India’s unwavering commitment to support Nepal in restoring peace and stability following these events.
The conversation took place shortly after Karki assumed office as interim Prime Minister, a position she has taken amidst heightened political tensions following the dissolution of Parliament after violent protests on September 8. These protests, primarily driven by Gen Z activists, arose from widespread dissatisfaction over corruption, lack of accountability, and the perceived failures of political leaders, particularly in response to a government ban on social media.
Karki, who made history as Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice and now serves as the first woman Prime Minister, has garnered significant backing from the Gen Z-led movement, which has rapidly reshaped Nepal’s political landscape. She is set to remain in office until March 5, 2026, when new elections will take place to establish a permanent government.
The former Chief Justice was sworn in as interim Prime Minister following the resignation of KP Sharma Oli, which was prompted by the protests. Demonstrators collectively endorsed Karki as a credible candidate for the role, citing her integrity and independence.
In a related diplomatic development, the Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, paid a courtesy visit to Karki at her office in Singha Durbar earlier this week. During this meeting, Srivastava conveyed a congratulatory message from Modi regarding Karki’s appointment. The Ambassador reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening the close ties of friendship and cooperation between the neighboring countries.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal noted in a statement that the meeting aimed to emphasize the importance of collaboration between India and Nepal, particularly in light of recent events.
Modi’s outreach underscores the significance of regional stability in South Asia and the role of diplomatic channels in addressing the aftermath of civil unrest. As Nepal navigates this critical juncture, international support and engagement will be pivotal in fostering a peaceful and stable environment for its citizens.
