Raj Thackeray Honors Grandfather’s Legacy on Birth Anniversary

On September 17, 2023, Raj Thackeray, the leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), commemorated the birth anniversary of his grandfather, Prabodhankar Thackeray, by paying tribute to his significant contributions as a social reformer. Prabodhankar Thackeray was known for his relentless efforts in advocating for societal welfare and reform throughout his life.

In a heartfelt message posted on the social media platform X, Raj Thackeray reflected on his grandfather’s courageous battle against conservative ideologies. He emphasized Prabodhankar’s profound impact on social reform and the Samyukta Maharashtra movement, which aimed to unify the Marathi-speaking population. Thackeray stated, “Today is the birth anniversary of our grandfather Prabodhankar Thackeray. Our grandfather fought the conservatives with three weapons: oratory, writing, and direct action.”

Raj Thackeray highlighted that Prabodhankar Thackeray drew inspiration from the works of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, which shaped his vision for social reform. The MNS chief noted that his grandfather not only laid the groundwork for progressive social initiatives but also stood firm against regressive forces of his time. He remarked, “Our beloved grandfather… not only laid the foundation of social work but also crushed those who interfered in it.”

Legacy of Social Reform and Political Unity

The MNS leader further noted that Prabodhankar Thackeray’s writings and reformist ideas were pivotal in opposing societal conservatism. He urged contemporary writers and artists to take a clear stand on pressing issues, contrasting this with his grandfather’s legacy of robust advocacy for social reform and literature. “Today, when we have to tell writers and artists to take a stand on a serious issue… our grandfather cannot be praised enough,” Raj Thackeray stated.

Raj Thackeray also acknowledged his grandfather’s crucial role in the Samyukta Maharashtra movement, where he prioritized unity over political and ideological differences. He pointed to Prabodhankar’s seminal work, Devachana Dharma ki Dharmachi Deole, to illustrate his grandfather’s vision. “If Grandfather were alive today… he would have attacked the system that markets religion and turns a blind eye to it,” Thackeray asserted, reflecting on the current societal dynamics.

In a show of respect, Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, also paid floral tributes to Prabodhankar Thackeray.
