The leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, Vijay, launched his first election campaign in Tiruchirappalli today, sharply criticizing both the DMK government and the BJP-led central administration. During a rally attended by thousands of supporters, Vijay accused both parties of betrayal, asserting that they share a “secret understanding” that undermines the interests of the people.

Vijay pointedly claimed that the DMK government has failed to deliver on its promises made during the 2021 Assembly election. Highlighting that 505 poll promises were made, he stated that “three-fourths remain unfulfilled.” He called out specific pledges, including the provision of Rs 1000 monthly assistance to women, the reduction of diesel prices, and the creation of jobs for youth.

“Have you done anything?” he challenged, directing his remarks at M K Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Vijay emphasized that the DMK’s assurances have not materialized, stating, “The DMK lies through its teeth.”

Vijay also addressed allegations of corruption within the DMK regime, specifically mentioning an illegal kidney sale racket. He articulated a vision for Tamil Nadu free from corruption and dynasty politics, promising that his party would focus on practical solutions if elected. His commitments included ensuring quality education, healthcare, and infrastructure, as well as enhancing women’s safety and law and order.

The rally saw him escalate his critique of the BJP, labeling the party as “fascist.” He expressed concern over what he perceives as attempts by the BJP to diminish the power of opposition parties in South India. Citing discrepancies in electoral rolls, he highlighted that “65 lakh voters are missing in Bihar,” criticizing the BJP’s electoral practices.

“The BJP wants to dissolve state governments and conduct simultaneous elections,” he warned, asserting that these actions represent a dangerous shift towards undermining democracy. Vijay firmly opposed initiatives like “One Nation, One Election” and delimitation, calling them plots to weaken opposition parties.

Despite technical difficulties during his address, which left much of his speech inaudible, Vijay underscored the significance of Tiruchirappalli as the site for his campaign launch. He noted its historical importance, referencing the legacy of Dravidian leaders such as CN Annadurai and MGR. Vijay expressed his belief that any political initiative beginning in Tiruchirappalli has the potential to transform the political landscape.

In conclusion, Vijay’s rally marked a significant step in his political journey, as he seeks to galvanize public support against what he deems the failings of the DMK and BJP. The campaign’s focus on accountability and promises made will likely resonate with voters as the election approaches.
