Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar recently marked the 12th anniversary of his political drama, Madras Café, which delves into the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The film, featuring John Abraham and Nargis Fakhri, remains a poignant reflection on a tragic event that significantly impacted Sircar’s life. In a recent interview, he shared insights into the film’s creation and the personal connections that fueled its narrative.

In discussing the film’s relevance, Sircar described the emotional toll of Gandhi’s assassination in 1991, stating, “I was in Delhi, and it shook me.” He noted that the political climate surrounding the incident deeply influenced his understanding of South Asian geopolitics. The filmmaker’s experience of witnessing both Gandhi’s and his mother, Indira Gandhi‘s, assassinations left an indelible mark on him, prompting a lifelong interest in the complexities of the region.

Challenges of a Groundbreaking Narrative

Creating Madras Café presented numerous challenges, particularly due to its sensitive subject matter. Sircar admitted that he felt uncertain about the film’s direction during its production. “It was a very, very difficult subject,” he explained. The project relied heavily on his research, drawing from newspaper articles and political essays rather than a pre-existing script or book.

Collaborating closely with writers Somnath Dey, Shubhendu Bhattacharya, and dialogue writer Juhi Chaturvedi, Sircar navigated the complexities of portraying real events and people. The film stands out as one of the first to incorporate the Indian intelligence agency, RAW, into its narrative, a move that was groundbreaking at the time of its release.

Sircar reflected on the difficulties of balancing authenticity with the need to avoid politicization. He aimed to present a narrative that was as factual as possible while steering clear of personal biases. This endeavor required extensive research and a commitment to a central narrative, which he and his team worked diligently to establish.

The Journey to Completion

At one point during production, Sircar considered shelving the project due to its challenges. “I thought of not making it,” he recalled. The team faced the daunting task of recreating the Sri Lankan city of Jaffna in locations across Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Despite these hurdles, Sircar persevered, driven by a desire to tell a compelling story.

The film is often regarded as one of Abraham’s most understated performances, capturing the weight of the historical events it portrays. Sircar emphasized the critical support he received from producer Ronnie Lahiri, who played a crucial role in bringing the project to fruition. Producing such a politically charged film required courage, especially during a time when the subject matter was delicate.

While the film achieved acclaim, Sircar expressed a lingering regret over the decision to use fictional names instead of the real individuals involved. He cited the complex legalities and clearance issues that necessitated this choice. “I wish I had used real names,” he admitted, reflecting on the challenges of navigating the political landscape during the film’s production.

As Madras Café celebrates its 12th anniversary, Sircar continues to engage with the themes it explored. The film remains a critical touchstone for discussions surrounding Indian politics and the historical events that shaped the nation. Its impact endures, reminding audiences of the profound consequences of political violence and the intricate web of geopolitics in South Asia.
