Hall of Fame Jockey Ron Turcotte, 84, Passes Away in New Brunswick

Hall of Fame jockey Ron Turcotte, known for guiding Secretariat to the Triple Crown in 1973, has died at the age of 84. According to a statement from his family, relayed by his longtime business partner and friend Leonard Lusky, Turcotte passed away from natural causes at his home in Drummond, New Brunswick, on Friday.
Turcotte’s illustrious career included victories in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes, achieving this remarkable feat twice each between 1965 and 1973. His most notable achievement came with Secretariat, a horse that not only won the Triple Crown but also set a record in the Belmont Stakes that remains unmatched after more than five decades.
Legacy of an Icon
Turcotte’s impact on horse racing is profound. He played a pivotal role in one of the most celebrated eras in the sport’s history. Secretariat’s performance under Turcotte’s guidance captivated audiences and solidified the horse’s legendary status. The record time of 2:24 for the Belmont Stakes, a feat that has yet to be surpassed, exemplifies the unique bond between the jockey and his horse.
Despite the triumphs, Turcotte’s career faced a tragic turn. In 1978, he suffered a life-altering injury after a fall from a horse, resulting in paraplegia. This incident ended his riding career but did not diminish his passion for the sport. Turcotte remained involved in horse racing and was a respected figure within the community, often sharing his experiences and insights with younger generations.
Turcotte’s legacy extends beyond his records and titles. He served as an inspiration to many aspiring jockeys and horse racing enthusiasts. His dedication and skill earned him a place in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, a testament to his contributions to the sport.
Tributes and Remembrance
The news of Turcotte’s passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes from the horse racing community and fans alike. Many have taken to social media to express their condolences and share memories of the legendary jockey. His influence on the sport, characterized by grace and determination, will be remembered for years to come.
In the words of Lusky, “Ron was not just a remarkable jockey; he was a remarkable person. His love for the sport and his dedication to excellence were evident in everything he did.”
As the racing world mourns the loss of Ron Turcotte, his achievements and the legacy he leaves behind will continue to resonate. His story serves as a reminder of the heights that can be reached through talent, hard work, and an unwavering spirit.
