Tata Power, a leading power company in India, has inaugurated the Energy Insights and Innovation Lab (EIIL) at its headquarters in Mumbai on December 26, 2025. This initiative aims to accelerate India’s transition to clean energy through innovative research and data-driven solutions. The collaboration involves the prestigious London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the International Growth Centre (IGC), a globally recognized research organization.

The EIIL is designed to tackle critical challenges in India’s power sector, focusing on improving the quality, reliability, and affordability of electricity services. Key issues include managing peak electricity demand and integrating renewable energy sources more effectively. The Lab’s establishment was celebrated with a ceremony attended by prominent figures including Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Power; Prof. Robin Burgess, Director of the IGC; and Dr. Jonathan Leape, Executive Director of the IGC.

Dr. Sinha highlighted the significance of the Lab in addressing the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions that align with India’s net-zero goals. The partnership aims to co-develop scalable solutions that utilize evidence-based approaches and global best practices. The signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Tata Power, LSE, and IGC formalizes this collaborative effort.

Leveraging Technology for Energy Solutions

The Energy Insights and Innovation Lab will utilize advanced technologies such as data analytics, consumer behavioral science, and energy systems modeling. By employing smart meters and Internet of Things (IoT) data, the Lab will conduct applied pilots to enhance demand-side management and bolster grid resilience. These initiatives are expected to alleviate stress on local networks during peak demand times while ensuring consumer comfort.

Moreover, the Lab’s focus on behavioral insights aims to shift and smooth electricity demand in urban households. This approach is crucial for creating a more reliable and efficient power supply system that accommodates the growing reliance on renewable energy sources.

Future Plans for Expansion and Innovation

The partnership between Tata Power, LSE, and IGC envisions transforming the EIIL into a full-scale innovation hub. Future plans include increasing funding, forging additional institutional partnerships, and expanding the Lab’s mandate. This broader scope will encompass support for tariff design to meet regulatory requirements, enhancing consumer flexibility, promoting distributed renewable energy systems, and advocating for energy equity.

The establishment of the Energy Insights and Innovation Lab marks a significant step forward in India’s efforts to achieve a sustainable energy future. By focusing on innovative solutions and collaboration among key stakeholders, Tata Power and its partners are positioning themselves at the forefront of the clean energy transition in India.
