Students Prepare for School Closures on December 18 Across India
As December 18, 2025, approaches, parents and students in India are keenly awaiting confirmation on school operations. Various states are considering declaring holidays due to significant factors, including elections, severe winter conditions, and ongoing rain alerts. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the latest updates from different regions across the country.
Weather and Election Impact on School Operations
Across northern India, intense cold waves and dense fog have raised concerns about student safety. In response, some states are evaluating the need for school closures. The situation is particularly pressing as winter conditions are impacting daily life, with authorities prepared to extend holidays should the weather deteriorate further.
In Delhi, schools will not close entirely on December 18. Instead, the government has mandated a hybrid mode of operation for educational institutions. In light of increasing air pollution levels, the Delhi Directorate of Education (DoE) has instructed schools to implement a combination of online and offline classes for students in Classes 1 to 9 and Class 11. This measure aims to protect children from polluted air while ensuring their education remains uninterrupted.
State-by-State Overview of School Operations
In Bihar, schools resumed operations on December 16, 2025, following the lifting of election-related restrictions. Classes are running as normal; however, many institutions, particularly at the primary level, have adjusted their schedules to introduce winter timings. This change is designed to accommodate students during the colder mornings prevalent at this time of year.
Meanwhile, schools in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh are set to remain open on December 18. However, the education departments in these states have issued cold-wave advisories to inform parents and students of the severe winter conditions. In districts experiencing harsh temperatures, morning hours have been modified to help students manage the cold more effectively.
In southern India, the Tamil Nadu School Education Department has announced a significant break for students. Starting December 24, schools across the state will enjoy a 12-day holiday following the conclusion of half-yearly examinations. This extended break, traditionally shorter, provides students with additional rest and recovery time.
As these developments unfold, both parents and students are encouraged to stay informed about local announcements and weather conditions. The ongoing adjustments reflect the authorities’ commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of students during this challenging period.
