Innovative Biometric-Psychological Assessment Patent Published in India
A patent application for a groundbreaking system that combines biometric data with psychological evaluations was published on December 5, 2023. The innovation, developed by a team at Kasturba Medical College (KMC) in Mangaluru, India, aims to assess cognitive and personality traits through a comprehensive approach.
The system, titled ‘A system and method for cognitive and personality assessment using biometric data and psychological evaluation,’ was spearheaded by Annesha Saha, a PhD scholar in the department of forensic medicine and toxicology at KMC. Under the guidance of Dr. B Suresh Kumar Shetty, the project integrates fingerprint analysis with structured psychological assessments, allowing for the creation of detailed cognitive and personality profiles.
Potential Impact on Career Guidance
This innovative approach holds significant promise for enhancing career guidance and counseling. By identifying natural talents, learning styles, and inherent strengths and weaknesses, it could transform how individuals navigate their professional paths. The research team also includes esteemed professionals such as Dr. B Unnikrishnan, dean and professor of community medicine; Dr. Gagan Bajaj, assistant professor in audiology and speech-language pathology; Dr. Mahesh BS, a clinical psychologist; and Mayur Sudhir Balbudhe, another PhD scholar in forensic medicine.
Dr. Shetty emphasized that while the system shows considerable potential, it is crucial to approach its implementation with caution. Recent evaluations suggest that the Dermatoglyphics Multiple Intelligence Test (DMIT) should be utilized as a supplementary tool alongside established instruments until more reliable data on the system’s effectiveness becomes available.
Growing Interest in Biometric-Psychological Assessment
The integration of multimodal biometrics with psychometric scoring represents a novel advancement in the field, reflecting a rising global interest in biometric-psychological assessment systems. The application of such innovative technology may pave the way for enhanced methodologies in psychological evaluations, making them more comprehensive and secure.
The publication of this patent showcases KMC Mangaluru’s commitment to pioneering research in health technology and psychological assessment. As the team continues to refine their system, the implications for both individual career development and broader psychological practices could be profound.
