Vijay Launches Public Campaign in Puducherry Ahead of Elections

Actor and politician Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is set to embark on a substantial public outreach campaign in Puducherry on December 5, 2023. This initiative marks a critical step as his party prepares for its debut in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, scheduled for April 2024.

The political landscape in Tamil Nadu is rapidly evolving, and as TVK intensifies its ground activities, the Puducherry roadshow is expected to draw significant public interest. This decision arose following stringent restrictions in Tamil Nadu imposed after a tragic incident in Karur, which resulted in the deaths of 41 individuals during a stampede at a TVK event. In response to this, the Tamil Nadu Police have denied permission for large public gatherings, compelling TVK to limit its recent programme in Kanchipuram to a smaller audience of 2,000 attendees.

Shifting the focus to Puducherry is viewed as a tactical move by TVK to maintain its momentum without facing administrative hurdles. Senior party leaders remain optimistic that the Union Territory will permit the event, allowing Vijay to engage with the public during this vital political period.

To ensure the event proceeds smoothly, TVK executives submitted a formal petition to the Puducherry Director General of Police (DGP). The petition details the proposed route for the roadshow and requests necessary security measures. According to the submission, Vijay will start his journey from Kalapet and interact with residents along a route that includes key locations such as Ajanta Signal, Uppalam Water Tank, Ariyankuppam, Thavalakuppam, Kirumampakkam, and Kanniakoil.

The event will run from 09:00 to 17:00 on December 5, and Vijay is scheduled to address supporters through a public-address system at various points along the route. The main address will take place near the Uppalam–Sonaampalayam Water Tank.

In its appeal to the Puducherry Police, TVK emphasized the need for adequate security and effective crowd management, highlighting the increasing turnout at Vijay’s events. The party stressed the importance of coordinated efforts to ensure the safety of participants and the successful execution of the programme.

As Vijay ramps up his political activities, the Puducherry roadshow is seen as a significant opportunity to enhance visibility and connect with voters in the lead-up to the high-stakes 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
