Bayer Leverkusen Stuns Manchester City 2-0 in Champions League Clash
Manchester City faced a surprising defeat at home, losing 2-0 to Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League on March 14, 2024. In a match marking Pep Guardiola‘s 100th game in charge of City in this competition, Alejandro Grimaldo and Patrik Schick scored to secure a crucial victory for the Bundesliga team. This result not only ends City’s unbeaten home run against German clubs in the Champions League but also marks their first loss in the tournament this season.
In a significant tactical shift, Guardiola made ten changes to the team following their recent loss to Newcastle United. Only Nico Gonzalez retained his spot in the starting lineup. Despite the alterations, City began the match aggressively, with Nathan Ake and Tijjani Reijnders both testing Leverkusen goalkeeper Mark Flekken early on.
Grimaldo and Schick Lead Leverkusen’s Charge
The breakthrough for Leverkusen came in the 23rd minute when Christian Kofane set up Grimaldo, who converted a low cross from Ibrahim Maza with a first-time strike into the bottom-right corner. City continued to apply pressure, but Flekken was in excellent form, denying further efforts from Reijnders and a deflected cross from Oscar Bobb.
Leverkusen doubled their lead shortly after the second half began. Schick powered a header past City goalkeeper James Trafford, showcasing the visitors’ clinical finishing ability. Despite the introduction of star striker Erling Haaland, City struggled to break through Leverkusen’s resolute defense. A late free-kick from Rayan Cherki was also thwarted by Flekken, who was pivotal in maintaining the clean sheet.
Statistics and Implications for Manchester City
The defeat is notable for several reasons. It marks the first time City has lost at home to a German club in the Champions League since 2013, when Guardiola’s Bayern Munich triumphed 3-1. City generated an expected goals (xG) value of 1.84 from 19 shots, while Leverkusen managed only 0.55 from seven attempts, highlighting the efficiency of the visitors.
Grimaldo’s goal was his eighth of the season across all competitions, making him the leading scorer for Leverkusen in the current campaign. This performance reflects a significant improvement from his previous season, where he netted only four goals in 48 appearances.
As the Champions League progresses, this defeat could impact Manchester City’s positioning in the tournament and their strategy moving forward. Guardiola will need to reassess his approach as they prepare for upcoming fixtures, aiming to regain their form in both domestic and European competitions.
