Sergio Gor Sworn in as New US Ambassador to India
US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, officially began his tenure on November 11, 2023, after taking the oath of office in a ceremony held at the White House. He expressed his eagerness to serve as the envoy to India and extended gratitude to President Donald Trump for the opportunity.
During the ceremony, which took place in the Oval Office, Vice President J D Vance administered the oath. Gor, aged 38, shared his excitement on social media, stating, “Very much looking forward to being the new U.S. Ambassador to India. Thank you @POTUS @realDonaldTrump! I’m deeply grateful for this opportunity and committed to honouring the faith you’ve shown in me.”
His appointment comes after confirmation by the US Senate in October, following a nomination by President Trump in August. Before this role, Gor served as the Director of Presidential Personnel. The oath-taking ceremony was attended by key officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, US Attorney General Pam Bondi, and US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro.
India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, congratulated Gor via social media, wishing him success as he prepares to assume his duties in New Delhi.
In his remarks during the confirmation process, President Trump highlighted the significance of the US-India relationship, describing India as “one of our country’s most important international relationships.” He emphasized Gor’s role in strengthening this strategic partnership, stating, “It’s a big deal. India is home to one of the world’s oldest civilisations… and it’s got over 1.5 billion people.”
At the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing in September, Gor affirmed his commitment to advancing US interests in this vital partnership. He noted that enhancing US-India trade ties would not only improve American competitiveness but also diminish China’s economic influence over other nations.
The new ambassador’s responsibilities will encompass various aspects of diplomatic relations, aiming to deepen cooperation between the two countries in areas such as trade, security, and cultural exchange. Gor’s experience and insights into the region are expected to play a crucial role in shaping future engagements between the US and India.
