Raipur Surgeon Reveals Safe Sugar Alternatives and Risks
The increasing concern over sugar consumption has led to a search for safer alternatives. Dr. Jayesh Sharma, a Consultant Surgical Oncologist at ITSA Hospitals in Raipur, has shared insights on various sugar substitutes, highlighting both their benefits and potential risks. In a recent social media post, he emphasized the importance of making informed choices when it comes to sweeteners.
With the prevalence of health issues linked to high sugar intake, such as weight gain, diabetes, and even cancer, understanding which substitutes are genuinely safe is crucial. Dr. Sharma begins by addressing artificial sweeteners commonly found in products like sugar-free colas and packaged snacks. He notes that while options like saccharin and aspartame are not highly toxic and do not cause cancer, they can affect gut bacteria and might lead to increased hunger, making them less effective for weight loss.
Evaluating Low-Calorie Alternatives
Dr. Sharma also examined low-calorie sugar substitutes, including sugar-free candies made from sucralose and erythritol. These sweeteners provide a sweet taste with minimal calorie intake, and they do not significantly raise blood sugar levels. However, he cautions that some individuals may experience mild digestive discomfort when consuming these products. As a result, he suggests that natural sugar might still be the preferable choice in many situations.
Stevia and Monk Fruit have gained popularity as natural sweeteners, and Dr. Sharma highlights their advantages. He describes them as plant-based options that do not contain calories and do not trigger sugar spikes. While Stevia has been established as a stable ingredient suitable for cooking, Monk Fruit lacks extensive long-term data. Nonetheless, he rates both sweeteners as approximately 80% safe, making them viable alternatives for those seeking to reduce sugar intake.
By analyzing the effects of various sugar alternatives, Dr. Sharma aims to empower consumers to make healthier choices. His recommendations underscore the importance of being aware of what is added to food and beverages to achieve sweetness without compromising health.
