On October 16, 2023, the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) hosted the Deepa Sanjeevini exhibition, a vibrant celebration of rural women entrepreneurs. This event took place at the KMC Lecture Hall Quadrangle in Manipal and highlighted the creativity of these women through handmade Diwali crafts. Organized in collaboration with the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) – Sanjeevini, Udupi Zilla Panchayat, the Dyot Foundation from the USA, and the Dr Dharmabala Namashivayam Trust from Chennai, the initiative underscores the importance of economic empowerment at the grassroots level.

A Platform for Empowerment

The exhibition was inaugurated by philanthropist Indira S Ballal, alongside Dr H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor of MAHE. The opening ceremony also featured notable attendees including Vijaya Kumar, Project Director of Zilla Panchayat, Udupi; Dr Vikram Baliga, Associate Director; and Dr Satish Kumar from the Manipal School of Commerce and Economics (MSCE). Coordinators of the Sanjeevini program, Avinash and Savitha, were also present to support the event.

Deepa Sanjeevini is more than just an exhibition; it encapsulates a festival of resilience and empowerment. Each handcrafted product on display represents a unique narrative of self-reliance and courage, showcasing how these rural women have transformed their livelihoods through entrepreneurial efforts. The initiative, backed by organizations like NRLM and the Udupi Zilla Panchayat, has enabled these women to harness their skills, thereby earning sustainable incomes.

Impact on Communities

During the event, dignitaries praised the entrepreneurial spirit of the women involved and commended the collaborative efforts of the Centre for Economics and Social Networking and MSCE. They emphasized the significance of providing a platform for these women to present their talents on a larger stage. Through Deepa Sanjeevini, the essence of Diwali extends beyond mere celebrations; it represents a collective effort to empower homes and communities.

“Every handmade product purchased at the exhibition stands as a gesture of solidarity and encouragement, helping rural women gain financial independence and confidence,” said an event spokesperson.

The valedictory program featured guests including Vani, Megha, and Manjunath Pai G, Chief Warden of MAHE, alongside Raghvendra M K, Head of Campus Safety, and others. Their presence highlighted the university’s ongoing commitment to social entrepreneurship and inclusive growth.

As the exhibition concluded, the message was clear: supporting these women not only helps them achieve economic independence but also strengthens the fabric of their communities. As MAHE continues to advocate for community development and women’s empowerment, Deepa Sanjeevini stands as a testament to the transformative power of entrepreneurship. This Diwali, the light of empowerment shines brightly, celebrating the remarkable contributions of these women who are now recognized as beacons of hope and inspiration.
