49ers Quarterback Brock Purdy Returns to Limited Practice

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy returned to practice on Wednesday, taking a significant step towards recovery from the toe injury he aggravated during Week 4. Coach Kyle Shanahan stated that Purdy would be limited in his participation, a precaution following the injury he initially sustained in a Week 1 victory against the Seattle Seahawks. Purdy had missed two games before returning on September 28, 2023, against the Jacksonville Jaguars, only to further aggravate the toe injury.
The 49ers have faced challenges this season with both Purdy and backup quarterback Mac Jones sidelined due to injuries. Jones is also dealing with knee and oblique issues and was limited in practice on Wednesday. Shanahan noted that Jones is expected to do more than Purdy, who is currently more restricted in his activities. The absence of both quarterbacks has significantly impacted the team’s preparations this season.
Shanahan commented on Purdy’s determination, saying, “Injuries frustrate people, but Brock is handling it right like he does everything. I know he’s itching to get back.” This reflects the competitive spirit of the 49ers, who are looking to regain crucial players leading up to their upcoming game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday Night Football at 20:20 ET.
Injury Updates and Team Dynamics
The return of Purdy could be complemented by the potential comeback of tight end George Kittle, who has been recovering from a significant hamstring injury. The 49ers officially opened Kittle’s 21-day practice window on Wednesday, indicating optimism about his return for the matchup against Atlanta. Running back Christian McCaffrey expressed excitement about Kittle’s potential return, emphasizing his impact on the team’s performance: “His presence is felt in every aspect of the game and his energy is so great.”
On a more somber note, linebacker Fred Warner underwent surgery on Tuesday for a dislocated and broken right ankle. Shanahan reported that the surgery went well but indicated it is too early to establish a definitive recovery timeline, although he suggested a potential recovery period of around three months.
The injury report for the 49ers also includes receivers Ricky Pearsall (knee) and Skyy Moore (ankle), who were not expected to practice. Additionally, several players are listed as limited, including receivers Jauan Jennings (ribs, ankle, shoulder) and Jordan Watkins (calf), along with guard Dominick Puni (knee) and defensive tackles Kevin Givens (pectoral), CJ West (thumb), and Kalia Davis (hand). Cornerback Renardo Green (neck) is also dealing with an injury.
As the 49ers navigate these injuries, the return of key players will be essential for their performance in the upcoming games, particularly against the Falcons, as they aim to solidify their standing in the league.
