Delhi Suspends Cough Syrup Sales Over Toxicity Concerns

The Delhi Drugs Control Department has ordered a halt to all cough syrup sales in the region due to concerns over diethylene glycol (DEG), a toxic industrial solvent. This decision follows reported deaths of 17 children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, allegedly linked to a contaminated cough syrup. The department’s move aims to ensure that all raw materials and finished products undergo rigorous testing for DEG contamination before being allowed back on the market.
In a notice sent to all cough syrup manufacturers operating in Delhi, the department mandated that “all the solvent(s), raw material and finished preparation of cough syrups may compulsorily be tested for presence of Diethylene Glycol (DEG).” The directive emphasizes that no cough syrup should be released without comprehensive testing for DEG, alongside other necessary quality checks.
Immediate Actions Taken by Authorities
To enforce these measures, the department has begun collecting random samples from chemists and suppliers across Delhi. An official from the department, who requested anonymity, stated, “Following the death of children due to adulterated cough syrup, namely Coldrif Syrup, which was found to have DEG, we have decided to take measures.” The official highlighted that reports from these tests are expected within 15 days.
In addition to testing, the notice requires manufacturers to maintain detailed records of their stock in accordance with the Drugs Rules, 1945. The department has warned that it will take stringent action against any firms that fail to comply with these directives.
The Drugs Control Department has also issued advisories to all chemist associations in Delhi. These advisories instruct pharmacies to immediately cease the sale of cough syrups, specifically Coldrif, Respifresh, and Relife, which are currently under investigation. Furthermore, retail pharmacies have been directed to ensure that cough syrups are not sold without valid prescriptions, enhancing oversight in the distribution of these products.
Context of the Toxicity Scare
The suspension of cough syrup sales is rooted in serious public health concerns following the tragic loss of young lives linked to tainted products. Officials have noted that seven pharmaceutical manufacturers in Delhi produce cough syrups under various brand names. The urgency of these measures reflects a growing need for safe pharmaceutical practices in response to recent incidents.
As the investigation continues, the authorities are prioritizing the health and safety of the public, particularly vulnerable populations such as children. The swift action taken by the Delhi Drugs Control Department underscores the critical importance of product safety in the pharmaceutical industry, especially in light of the recent fatalities.
The situation remains fluid, with ongoing testing and monitoring efforts aimed at ensuring the integrity of cough syrups sold in the market. The department’s proactive approach seeks not only to prevent further tragedies but also to restore public confidence in the safety of pharmaceutical products in Delhi.
