Farhan Akhtar recently shared insights about his directorial debut, the iconic film Dil Chahta Hai, and offered reflections on his journey since then. Released in 2001, the film not only transformed the landscape of Indian cinema but also established Akhtar as a prominent figure in the industry. The film, featuring stars such as Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Akshaye Khanna, explored themes of friendship and the challenges of growing up, resonating deeply with audiences.

Looking back, Akhtar recalled how he was just 25 years old when he directed the film. “They took a chance on a 25-year-old with a script and no idea of how to produce a film,” he noted, reflecting on the leap of faith taken by the film’s cast and crew. This pivotal moment not only marked his entry into filmmaking but also shaped his career. “It gave me this life,” he added, emphasizing the significance of the project.

As he reminisced about his younger self, Akhtar acknowledged the stress he often felt in his early years. He expressed a desire to impart wisdom to his younger self, stating, “I’d tell myself to enjoy the journey a little more.” This perspective underscores his growth as both an artist and an individual.

A Milestone Birthday and Continued Success

Turning 50 last year was a significant milestone for Akhtar, one that resonated with his family and friends, including his wife, Shibani Dandekar, whom he married in 2022. When asked about the changes he has experienced, he smiled and remarked, “I feel like I should start behaving like I’m 50, although I don’t know what that is. I’m just continuing down the path.” His light-hearted approach reflects a blend of maturity and the enduring passion he has for his work.

Following the success of Dil Chahta Hai, Akhtar has continued to make waves in the industry, directing and producing films like Rock On!! (2008), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), and Fukrey (2013). His latest project, Kho Gaye Hum Kahan, released in 2023, further showcases his commitment to storytelling.

Upcoming Film: 120 Bahadur

On the professional front, Akhtar is preparing for the release of 120 Bahadur, set to premiere in November 2023. The film draws inspiration from the Battle of Rezang La during the 1962 Indo-China war, recounting the valiant efforts of 120 Indian soldiers from the 13 Kumaon Battalion. These soldiers defended a critical pass in Ladakh against a formidable adversary, with only a few surviving after the fierce battle. Akhtar plays the role of battalion commander Major Shaitan Singh, a role he feels carries significant weight.

“People like Shaitan Singhji are made of a very different metal, jis mitti se bane hain woh ek alag mitti hai,” Akhtar commented, noting the profound impact and responsibility that comes with portraying such a historical figure. His dedication to portraying the heroism of those soldiers reflects his respect for their sacrifice and bravery.

As Farhan Akhtar continues to evolve in the film industry, his reflections on his past and aspirations for the future reveal a deep connection to his craft and an understanding of the importance of both personal and professional growth.
