Caitlin Clark, star player for the Indiana Fever, expressed her support for Napheesa Collier’s recent criticisms of WNBA leadership, stating that Collier “made a lot of very valid points.” During her first media availability since mid-July, Clark emphasized the urgency for strong leadership in the league, particularly as it approaches a pivotal moment in its history.

Collier, a key player for the Minnesota Lynx, publicly challenged WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert earlier this week. She claimed Engelbert told her that Clark “should be grateful she makes $16 million off the court, because without the platform that the WNBA gives her, she wouldn’t make anything.” Clark stated she had not heard this comment before and has not received any communication from Engelbert since Collier’s remarks.

Urgency for Leadership in the WNBA

In reflecting on the current state of the league, Clark remarked, “This is straight-up the most important moment in this league’s history.” With over 25 years of existence, she believes it is crucial for the WNBA to capitalize on its current momentum. Clark also pointed to the impact of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) agreements, which have allowed college players to build their brands and earn money prior to joining the league, as she did during her time at Iowa.

When asked about the qualities of effective leadership, Clark highlighted the importance of relationships. She noted, “It’s all about relationships, and that’s the truth.” Clark explained that strong connections with teammates, front office staff, and league officials are essential for fostering a positive environment. She stressed the need for leaders who genuinely care about their team members.

Teammate Sophie Cunningham further voiced her frustrations regarding league leadership, declaring, “Not really a fan of our leadership in the W.” She criticized the WNBA’s management, claiming they have failed players and emphasized the need for accountability. Cunningham added that she has received messages from NBA players expressing concern over how WNBA athletes are treated.

Cunningham also addressed the league’s officiating, describing it as resembling a “battlefield.” She criticized the lack of improvements in officiating standards despite requests for changes. Furthermore, she described ongoing negotiations around the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) as “very, very poor,” highlighting player frustrations about stalled discussions. The current CBA is set to expire at the end of October 2025.

Concerns Over Potential Lockout

The prospect of a lockout looms as Cunningham emphasized that players will not participate in games until their demands are met. She stated, “This would be the dumbest basketball decision business-wise ever, considering the momentum the WNBA has right now.” Players are scheduled to hold a call to receive updates on the negotiations.

Clark and Cunningham are among five players from the Fever who have been ruled out for the remainder of the 2025 season due to injuries. Clark, who has played just 13 games this year, shared that she suffered a severe ankle sprain while recovering from a groin injury. She expressed optimism about her recovery, stating she feels she is “probably starting to feel my best” and hopes to return to full practice by the end of October.

As players like Clark prepare for future opportunities, including potential roles with USA Basketball, the discussions surrounding leadership and player rights in the WNBA remain critical. The outcome of the CBA negotiations will likely have significant implications for the future of the league and its athletes.
