The central government of India has sanctioned ₹260.56 crore for the rehabilitation of Wayanad, a region significantly impacted by a devastating landslide disaster. This funding, sourced from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), was approved by a high-level committee led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Kerala had originally requested ₹2,221 crore to address the extensive damage caused by the landslide. This approval marks the first special funding package provided by the central government specifically for the rebuilding efforts in Wayanad.

Broader Financial Support for Disaster-Affected States

In addition to Wayanad, the central government has allocated a total of ₹4,645.60 crore to nine states affected by various disasters. Among these allocations, ₹1,270.78 crore has been directed to Assam, which also faced significant challenges from a landslide incident in 2022.

The central government has further committed ₹2,444.42 crore towards flood-control measures in urban areas across the country. Notably, Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, is included in the second phase of the Urban Flood Risk Management Project, which aims to enhance the region’s resilience against flooding.

Previous Assistance and Ongoing Efforts

Prior to this recent allocation, Kerala had received ₹529.50 crore as a loan for disaster management purposes. Additionally, in July, the state was granted ₹153 crore to support similar initiatives. The Chief Minister of Kerala had previously reached out to the Prime Minister, requesting a special package to facilitate the recovery and rebuilding efforts in Wayanad.

In a show of solidarity, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi, along with other members of the United Democratic Front (UDF), met with Amit Shah to advocate for increased support for their constituency. This collaborative effort highlights the urgency and importance of addressing the needs of those affected by recent natural disasters.

The support from the central government is a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to rehabilitate Wayanad and ensure the safety and well-being of its residents as they strive to rebuild their lives following this tragic event.
