US Designates The Resistance Front as Foreign Terrorist Organization
The United States has officially designated The Resistance Front (TRF), linked to the Pakistan-based group Lashkar-e-Taiba, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). This decision follows the deadly attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, on April 22, 2025, in which 26 civilians were killed. The US House Committee on Foreign Affairs emphasized that those who target civilians cannot escape accountability.
The announcement was made during a recent committee meeting, where Chairman Brian Mast affirmed the US commitment to combating terrorism. He stated, “When you butcher civilians, you don’t get a pass—you get justice. It was a terrorist attack—simple and straightforward.” The committee also criticized a report by the New York Times that described the attackers as “militants,” arguing that the label should be “terrorists.”
In a post on social media platform X, the committee underscored its position by altering the headline of the New York Times article, replacing “militants” with “terrorists” in bold red letters. The committee’s statement reflected a broader frustration with media terminology related to terrorism.
Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, announced the punitive measures against TRF, reiterating the government’s commitment to counter-terrorism efforts. He highlighted that this designation aligns with President Donald Trump’s push for justice following the Pahalgam attack. The US government aims to send a strong message regarding its stance on terrorism, especially in the context of international incidents affecting civilians.
India has welcomed the US designation, viewing it as a significant affirmation of the cooperative efforts between India and the US in countering terrorism. Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar described the move as a strong reinforcement of shared security interests.
The TRF, identified as a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba, has been increasingly active in the region, and its actions have drawn international condemnation. The US decision is expected to bolster international cooperation against such groups that threaten civilian safety and stability in conflict regions.
This designation not only impacts TRF but also highlights the ongoing challenges posed by terrorism globally. The US continues to work with allies to address these threats, ensuring that justice is pursued for innocent victims of violence.
